Hi,
Well As most of you know I had a THR 3 and a half years ago.
The second one was due about 4months later when they decided it might be referred pain from my back to my hip.....Off they went down that route.
One consultant would say it was referred pain from my back to my hip and the other would say it was from my hip to my back  :?

The back consultant eventually referred me to the pain clinic.
I've had some good results from them eg: a group that meets once a month "Coping with Chronic Pain" Its excellent.....very casual, you can go for as long as you want to....some have been going for 10 years....very good speaker and its a nice social time.

Tens Machine...{Not much good!!} Facet joint injections.....that was about 3 weeks ago....No luck with those either.

Next thing is.....an appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon that did my first THR to discuss the 2nd one being done.
Appointment isn't until the 4th Oct but at least its a start.

The pain consultants attitude was "well we cant do anything for your back but we can for your hip so that might help a bit...then you only have the back pain to worry about" :? I suppose he is right.

Love
Hileena

Hopeful then that it's hip referring to back lol, and that it'll be gone once you get your second THR. It's scary to me that so many consultants disagree with each other, I so hope you can get this sorted out. Great to hear you enjoy your time at the pain clinic, I think it must be nice to meet folks IRL who know what you're dealing with. Hugs x

Hm, yes. I do hope he's right, Hileena, and it does make for a big improvement. It must be a bit daunting, though, going in for an op when you feel it's 50/50 whether or not it helps. I do hope it makes a huge difference and thanks for the update.

I sometimes wish these consultant had been through some of the pain it would help them understand....
I am hoping when you get this appointment things will be clearer...but I doubt it..like you I was 50/50 and just didn't want this THR..but at the min I am glad I did...not sure why I am saying this you have tried all the option like me....I would love to see you in less pain..so fingers crossed that its the right thing for you xx

    Hi
Sorry I'm late getting back to the forum.
The latest is I have received a copy letter from the psychologist {saw her for 6 appointments and am discharged now} The letter was to the consultant at the pain clinic.
One of the things she said was that the only thing we couldn't improve on was my sleep....{I know loads of us have the same problem.} I waken up about 6 times at night but not for long....but long enough to make me feel as if I've never been to bed....not at all refreshed in the morning.
Then she said "but I know you have prescribed meds for that so hopefully they will help"........I haven't got them  Pregabalin......I went to my GP who said on top of my other anti convulsants she wouldn't advise it and it would make me drowsy {more so than most do  } Probably wouldn't function brilliantly.
The main reason I didn't try them was because of the other anti convulsants I'm on.........don't want to rock the boat...everything has been stable for 30 years.
I should have an appointment in about a month with the pain clinic......not looking forward to it

    Hi Hileena
sorry I am a bit late to this.
I hope that you can have a good talk with the orthopaedic doc in October, and you can then make an informed decision about your THR.
As you know I have both hips replaced and have lumbar spine problems. I can only say how I have found things for me, my hip pain is much less now. I do get aches, but not the awful arthur nagging hip pain. My back is still a problem, but it always will be I guess. For me, the THR`s have reduced my pain overall which has to be a good thing.
Good luck with your appointment x

    Thanks NB
If it helps some of the pain I'll be happy......not expecting miracles
I know they can do nothing for my back and personally wouldn't want a back op now.......so we'll see how it goes....seems a long time away
