Comfortable Shoes

I have suffered with painful, stiff feet for nearly 25 years, I am flat footed and my feet over-pronate. Just recently I have been trying to take regular walks in order to get my fitness levels up etc but my feet have become unbearably painful. I actually feel like I'm walking on the bones of my feet.

I have insoles and gel pads which aren't really helping. I need to find some really comfortable shoes for work. I'm not on my feet all day but would just like a pair of reasonably fashionable but comfortable shoes.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have been looking at Ecco as I have heard they are really good, well made shoes that support your feet. I don't want them totally flat as I find this makes the pain worse and have seen a quite nice, plain pair of court shoes, but just wondered if anyone had any experience of Ecco shoes or have any other good ideas.

Many thanks!

It's a very individual thing - I think your best approach is to try on as many of the better makes as you can until you find what suits you. I saw a report in the press over the week-end that the 'science' behind the MBTs and their ilk has been discredited - play safe with Ecco, Clarks, Hotter etc. I love my Crocs for every-day but I have Ecco and Hotter for smarter use. The only shoes that suite my feet are the velcro ones...but they must have an arch support..there are quite a few on the market..at the min mine are Pave**..hope this helps and you find something very soon.

Hi. I go for Ecco or Josef Seibel. I need a very wide fitting and find they are the most comfortable. They are on the expensive side but are well made and last a long while. I now find I need a fairly flat shoe as my back tends to feel very 'unsafe' if I try wearing even a low heel (which probably sounds ridiculous). I need to try and find a pair of very low heeled or flat shoes suitable for evening wear but am not having much success.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

Modern material walking boots(loads of cushioning), a size larger than you need, don't do the laces up and once used to them, stay with them as different shoes will make you walk differently and upset all your joints working upwards.

As to the 'walking on bones' that sounds like my 'walking with broken bones', don't know why, it ain't nice, I try and walk on my heels and not too fast. I don't buy expensive, if I'm using one pair a lot they don't last and in any case I'm tight. I have tried most boot and shoes over the years, insoles (super duper expensive and NHS), socks and foot therapy machines and baths, all a waste of money! Get a comfortable pair of shoes and stick with them.

Thanks for all your tips. I've made an appointment to see my GP tomorrow as I've done hardly any walking for the last month or so and my feet are still really painful and I find myself hobbling along most of the time! Once this awful heatwave has ended I want to get out walking again as this keeps my energy levels up etc, so I really need to try and sort out my feet!

    Thanks again

hiking trainers were a lot of help for me. but...always wear an additional pair of insoles. hiking/walking boots are good too and offer some extra support for the calfs. either are expensive.
then again, my other footwear includes an old pair of wrangler boots which are a bit on the heavy side when walking and a bit clumpy now and then, desert boot type

Thanks so much for your replies. I have seen some shoes I quite fancy on both the Hotter and Ecco website, so I have started saving up!
