TO HAVE A 2nd THR OR NOT?

Hi
I have to see the orthopaedic surgeon in a couple of weeks and this is what is going to be asked?

I had my first one 4 years ago......the pain wasn't bad then but I was talked into it. He said I needed both done...one was almost as bad as the other. I was booked in to have the 2nd one done 4 months later.
It was then cancelled by them because they thought it might be referred pain from my back

After my first one {problems with spinal block because of my spinal problems} my mobility gradually got worse. Whether that was the THR not working or my back getting worse I don't know.....it may have happened anyway without the THR

Almost four years on I'm seeing him again....I've been seeing the back specialist and he referred me to the Pain clinic....eventually they said that nothing could be done for my back {scoliosis and spinal stenosis} but my hip could be replaced which MIGHT help so that's why the referral back to the orthopaedic surgeon again.
Not sure whether to go through with it or not....I know you cant make up my mind for me......... but any advice would be welcome.

The pain appears to be mostly in my back {as far as I'm concerned} apart from at night......the bones on either side {hips} are sore when I lie on them

Love
Hiileena

Hileena I think you know what I will say after all my palaver, my back isn't cured after my THR but I would say the pain is now 6 out of ten instead of ten..its not easy I know but whatever you decide and it is your decision, we will all be behind you you.
Its been a long haul for you and I would love you to get some relief xx

    Hi Hileena
As you said, no one can decide for you,,but I have experience of 2 THR`s and back problems.
For me , similar to Barbara, although it has not always gone smoothly, and I am still in pain with my back (especially after a slipped disc last week), my hip pain is a lot less.
I hope you get time to ask plenty of questions at your appointment and you can make a fully informed decision. The only thing I will say is that, leaving your hips longer, for them to get weaker muscle-wise (as I did with my first) makes the recovery much harder. I am re building my muscle strength on both sides still now, and my physio said my left (which was my first THR side) is the weakest muscle wise!
If you ever need a chat pm me .

I can't help either but in your shoes I would take the opportunity because any reduction in pain anywhere has to be worth while. It's all to do with the quality of life we can achieve whilst we're here to live it. DD

I think you probably know me and my views, Hileena. I'd go for it every time. It worked for Barbara and NB makes a good point about leaving it longer while getting worse. I know it's not an easy choice though.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hugs Hileena, sounds like it's not an easy decision. Whilst I can't help you, I would ask - are you worried that a second THR will impact further on your mobility?

    Hi Everyone
I'm just on my way out {about 10 mins time} to do my voluntary work at the hospital....5 hours today  I was going to back out of today but there are 3 of us doing it and one of the others is ill....so I'll be there but not doing any heavy lifting.
Barbara....Yes I do know your opinion  hear you later

NB.......How are you now...any better? The problem I have is that I don't have very much pain in my hip really.....it feels as if its in my back. I do know that if I leave it for too long....its already been almost 4 years from it was first planned {their fault} that it will be harder to recover. As for questions......well you know me  I'll be there armed with my list and he is good. One time after my first one I went to see him and he looked at me and laughed......where's your list??????

DD.....I know what you mean...that's part of the problem will it help the quality of life? As I said to NB there isn't a lot of pain in my hip....all in my back :?

SW...Yes I know your views and I've got a lot of thinking to do before the appointment.

Toots.....I couldn't be much worse mobility wise than I am but I suppose its at the back of my mind that what little mobility I do have could be worse and the thought of hitting the wrong place when doing injections in my back.....I've got such a rubbish back

Well better move if I'm to get any voluntary work done

    Thanks everyone

    Love
    HIleena

We haven't really clarified anything for you, have we? :( My thinking is that if the hip qualified for a replacement then it surely will still qualify now, unless either it was never the hip in the first place or you have somehow got better. I like further muddying the waters.

Well done to you for carrying out your voluntary duties today despite all that is whirling round in your mind. I have the whirling stuff too but I am going to run away and look at the sea. DD

So you know my knowledge is still in rudimentary stages lol, but I second what DD says about your hip still 'qualifying' for replacement. My understanding is that the joint can be terribly deteriorated but not causing a lot of pain. I have to presume they're considering the condition of the hip, not just the pain factor ....

    Hi
Thanks again....I know only I can decide but it does help to let it all out......
Trust you to muddy the waters DD :lol::lol:
That's my thinking....was it the hip......although the X Rays showed it was bad if not very sore........is it my back????
    I'm back from my volunteering and am shattered.......it turned out to be longer than we thought it would be today.....a couple of newly diagnosed patients wanting to ask loads of questions {don't blame them but after 5 hrs there I could have done with walking out and going home :lol: }

    Hi Hileena

sorry I am late on here

I think (and you know that's not easy for me  )I remember how painful things got for Barbara.....

I also remember you before and post your first THR......

How up to date are your Xrays?? maybe a good chat to 'the man who knows' will help you to decide.

I totally understand your reservations :?

and finally - you probably really helped those folk today :D

    love and ((()))

    Hi Toni
Sorry I'm late answering you
You remember me before my first THR  Its more than I remember
X Rays aren't up to date. You know how lovely Mr Asaad is so I will have a good chat with him and go with my list of questions
I do hope we helped the people yesterday. It was very busy but very fruitful in as much as people came back to see us to ask more questions and have a talk because they had been to see us before.

    Love
