The calm is over

Hi all,
Sorry I've not around on here much, I do drop in occasionally to see what's happening. The reason I've not been around much is that over the past four or five months my OA has behaved itself, well sorta, just the odd ache and pain but nothing too bad ... BUT over the past week it feels like all hell's broken loose!
My fingers, ankles and feet are now almost constantly sore and continually reminding me! But my knees have been giving me all sorts of pain, the paindullers don't seem to be doing anything. I know I'm in better shape than most, but walking upstairs is very tough (behind my left knee cap is the worst), and at work on Friday I was hobbling around so badly I was considering buying some walking sticks and that's not like me ... I can usually get out and walk for miles at a descent clip unaided, as long as there's no real hills to negotiate. And even tonight in bed my knees are talking very loudly to me. Even my emergency Tramadols aren't doing much ... HELP!

Hi,
It seems your body is telling you you're pushing it too hard with your lengthy walks & at quite a pace too!! :?
Have you been to see ure GP for new xrays? If not maybe it's needed. Also are you taking, for instance, paracetamol every 6hrs?
Sorry, I'm being down right useless so have some (((((hugs))))) instead

I have to agree with Debbie. I think you're trying too hard. Maybe it's time to go a bit easier on the knees with the walking (Get some hiking poles. They help take the pressure off) and a period of round the clock meds (only as prescribed) just until things settle down again. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hello scozzie
Its good to have you back but so sorry you are suffering...I have OA in multiple joints so I know some of what you are going through..have you been seen by a pain clinic..sometimes we only take meds when the pain comes on, but you are suppose to keep on top of it..I do hope you can get some relief very soon xLove

Arthritis of any form does this. It lulls you into a false sense of security then WHAM - it hits you hard simply because you can. Speaking as someone who hasn't walked without aids for years I can understand your feelings of 'loss' but they could make all the difference. I think I am right that you have troubles in both knees? It's time to become a quadruped, it's the only way to ease matters (and challenging when beer etc has been a tad overdone!) DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Poor you Scozzie
I do hope things ease back for you, but if they don't maybe some walking sticks would help??
Barbara has a point there you know - maybe you are taking your meds 'too late' almost?? and only when you are in real trouble???
Love

Hi all thanks for the replies, with regard to my paindullers I take 2 x 30/500 cocos and Ibuprofen three times daily weather I feel I need them or not ... I take the afternoon dose of cocos if I'm not having a good day. The trammies are taken in place of the cocos if I'm having a really bad day.
As far as the walking goes, over the past few weeks with autumn's arrival, i have not been able to get out much as I would like, as I don't walk in the rain and last week was one of those weeks where I didn't get out much.

I'm not sure what you can do, scozzie. It might be the change in the weather, the lack or your regular exercise or, more probably, just one of those unpredicatable turns for the worse that arthritis can do. I still think hiking poles might help, especially for downhill bits. My husband swears they take a lot of pressure off the knees. But the only other thing I can think of is a chat with the GP and maybe even stronger meds.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Thanks Sticky
I also forgot to mention the other bug bear with my left knee, which doesn't happen when I'm out walking. Every so often left knee seems to catch or stick or what ever term you use for it, which is slightly painful but more annoying and I have to flex my knee after an episode. And these episodes are coming more often.
It happens when I change direction, or step down from an elevated position ... it hasn't given way on me yet, but it feels it might some time in the future.
As a little aside, a few weeks I stubbed the pinky of my left hand into a table at work as I was manoeuvring for a better grip of the box I was carrying. I have never felt such pain in my hands, anyway my has recovered a little, but since the accident holds the title of my sorest finger ... lol.
Cheers

Ouch poor pinkie!!!
Scozzie I hope I didn't miss this, but if you don't already use any walking aid it might be an idea to think about if the knee is worrying you that it might let you down.
Love
