So, it was the open day on Saturday and footfall through the front door was far in excess of what was expected (and booked). The comments, alas, were all pretty negative, I would have thought that the phrasing on the particulars was enough to warn people that the property has been untouched in terms of development since it was built but people can be dim at times. The most insulting offer was two hundred and fifty under the initial pricing (I think not) but one or two look promising.

On the plus side the remainder of the inheritance tax has been paid off and we are now waiting for the banks to cough up my late Ma's money. And will wait, and wait, and wait . . . . send me what is rightfully mine? Why, for heavens' sake? DD

    Hi
I just wondered why you have to pay inheritance tax?
Typical of the government who ever it is to make money on our dear and departed

Governments need money, Maria, so what better way to gain more by capitalising on the lifetimes' hard work and sacrifice made by those who have already paid taxes throughout their lives? I have inherited over the level where the tax cuts in, that's all.

Barbara? Yup, you're right, they swish it out of our accounts far faster than they ever pay in! DD

Many aspects of taxation are unfair. I prefer to be honest and cough up than not and be jailed. HMRC has many powers, all scary.

Tentative negoitiations are under way regarding an offer which has been made. This is also scary. DD

Aye DD I agree never mess with the Revenue

Good to hear the day was productive and I hope a good offer can be accepted sooner rather than later.

I remember when my mom & Dad in law passed the solicitors seemed to be doing everything at snails pace and then it came to me from when I worked at the estate agents they hold back on sorting wills so they can reap interest on the money! I badgered them everyday so they hated me! As for the your mom's property sale did the agent put on the front of the property details 'In need of modernization'? And it should be on the advert online and newspaper adverts if they advertise in a newspaper. That way viewers know what state the property is in. You will get triers on who will make ridiculous offers on the house, we had an offer from a complete a-hole of £35,000 under the asking price. The agent has to inform you of every offer made on the property even if someone offered a £1 !!!

Oh yes, they did say it on the details, they were upfront about the house's current state and its potential. People now expect far more than Ma's house has to offer - some people seemed to think it was the equivalent of a cave. :? What the agents have done is completely over-estimate its value - twerps. They are supposed to know their market. Idiots. DD

I am waiting for the agent to ring me back. She is going to make a young mother's Thursday because she can buy and move in to the house of her dreams. Not bad going I suppose, open day on the 5th, sold by the 10th. It's six months to the day that Ma died. I wanted the house to be sorted within six months and it is (all bar the paperwork).

    I am sad. DD

I'm so sorry DD that this is taking so long so it's making you feel low, Dad's paperwork took a long time to sort out and it took over 6mnths to sell his house. All I can say is know a figure in your head that you are willing to except for the house and if these any leeway maybe reduce the price the house is on for leaving enough leeway for someone to make a lower offer and you to negotiate it up to the figure you are willing to sell at! Hope this may help you a little.

I'm not sad about the house, I am sad about the six-month anniversary of Ma's death. At 9am the 'phone rang with the news that Ma was doing OK. At 9.30 it rang with 'You have to get here.' At 11.30 it rang with the news that she had gone. I hadn't made it there, I was still 130 miles away waiting for my husband to come home to take me.

I am cross with the agents because they overpriced it by a considerable amount. They were recommended to me as being the specialists in selling houses in that area so I feel their misjudgement is appallling. To paraphrase G B Shaw 'He who can does, he who can't becomes an estate agent.' DD
