NSAIDs and IBS?

Hi,

I struggle with ibuprofen as it gives me an upset stomach (I can't take co-codamol for a similar - but opposite - reason ). Does anyone know if some NSAIDs are better than others for stomachs, or if there are ways to stop the side effects? My GP has prescribed topical capsaicin rather than an NSAID but it's doing v little, so I'd like to be informed when I next see her as to if there are some I could try.

I've only tried the standard ones you buy anywhere, so will def ask the GP about coated ones. not heard of stomach protector either, but anything that helps...especially as I have a downstairs bathroom

    Hello,

I have horrible IBS and I've been on 400mg which is the max dose of celebrex (celecoxib) for about 4 years with no gastro side effects at all. I take omeprazole which is a stomach protector (think it's called a PPI) and there are similar drugs in that family just due to the dose of my NSAID and the long-term nature.

Celebrex is a slightly different type of NSAID to ibuprofen. It's a type of drug called a cox2 inhibitor which is meant to be slightly more kind on the stomach. It's expensive though, so every year or so I get hauled in front of the GP who owns the surgery and get forced to pleased my case!

All the best of luck finding one that suits you.

    Trial & error I'm afraid :(

I've had ibs since I was 14 which has gotten progressively worse ever the years.

Codiene and tramadol are the worst for me but I can take the horrific cramping and days on the loo (sorry  ) much better then I can the arthritis.

I'm on Enbrel again for the arthritis and so far it doesn't effect it.

I'm also on mebevarin/ mabeverline? Can't recall the exact name! But it really helps take the edge off :)

The basic advice is make sure you NEVER take Brufen on an empty stomach. The rest is that yes you can ask your gp for medication to help your stomach cope with the meds. I was on Brufen for 2 years and my stomach has never been the same. yes the co-codamol causes that problem for me too...you can try the natural way of prunes, fibre or even senna tablets for that side effect?

Unfortunately a lot of the medications are tough on our stomachs but there are also lots of tablets there for the stomach to such as esomeprazole. I hope if you explain to your gp the problems your are having they will find you a solution. Try to be as honest and with them as you can, if you don't tell them exactly what is going on they want know how to help you.

    Hi
Like others have said.....Omneprozol or Lansoprozol......speeling not right I'm sure but they are the 2 stomach protectors that I know off.
You should be taking one regardless of the IBS if you are taking inflammatories and lots of meds

Thanks all. Sezeelson: mebeverine is my saviour! Don't think I could live without it.

GP has given me enteric coated naproxen, so fingers crossed for them, but she said that stomach protectors can give you diarrhoea?! So wasn't keen on prescribing me those. Hopefully the naproxen will be OK; will make sure to take it with food.
