I only saw my consultant a few weeks ago and have just received my appointment for my Trapeziectomy in THREE weeks time  , I wasn't expecting to have it done until January which was giving me time to get Christmas out the way and suited me fine.(was told three months waiting list is that quick or wot!!)
I am now going to have to get all my Christmas shopping done and wrapped pronto as I am not going to be able to drive for a while. I will need to get the freezer emptied, do come batch cooking and make sure washing and ironing are kept up to date..... Phew!!!! my biggest concern is if my hand is going to be ok for driving at Christmas as I am spending it with my sister :? but what ever happens I am sure Santa Claus will fix it for me ................Marie xx

That was quick. It is definitely a good idea to pre plan very carefully. To give you some idea of what to expect this is my tale so far. I am now 8 weeks trapeziectomy post op. I have huge improvements in many areas however I cannot drive yet. I have 5 Kg of grip in my right hand compared to 25 in my left. I cannot hold a full mug, write very well, hold a hairdrier, iron or cut with a knife and pulling up jeans is still uncomfortable. If I overuse it the thumb area becomes extremely painful and swells quite considerably. I have specific physio exercises 4 times daily and after a thermoplastic splint for the first few weeks I am down to a neoprene one to give support to the thumb and. I massage the scar 3 times a day. The operation was well needed and I am glad I had it done although be prepared to be quite frustrated for a while. My recovery seems to be on par with what the surgeon said. I recommend non slip matting for the table and work surfaces and a Limbo arm protection for bathing and showering. Hope this gives you some idea of what it may be like, however we all heal at different rates so go with what the physio says. Hope all goes well? Keep us updated. X0

No advice, Marie but Michelle63 seems to have covered most bases. I do seem to go in for Christmas ops though so, yes, do get all sorted beforehand. I hope it all goes well.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi
That was quick, hope you get sorted in time......I saw my consultant about a second THR and he gave me a date there and then  13th Dec  but then I got a letter about a week later cancelling it and saying I was anaemic :x Just when I had got my Christmas Head on and was sorting things.....I'm just finishing my first course of ferrous sulph. and have to on Thurs to have bloods re done and see whether I'm still anaemic  The GP will write to the surgeon and let him know....so with me I'm sure it will be the new year now.
Hope you get sorted and its great that you are spending Christmas with your sister
Love

Well Marie, I think that's a good thing. Less time to stress about the op. You'll be so busy preparing, you won't have time to think about it.
Good luck, I hope everything goes well, and you manage to get to your sister's for Christmas.
Take care, thinking of you. ((()))

Wowzers. I think it's a good thing though, it will be done and dusted before the New Year so hopefully 2014 will get off to a better start. We'll be with you every step of the way, OK? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Blimey Marie! You had better go into 'super drive' as you say and get Christmas organised.. ect! We all know what hubbies are like at organizing things!! Do you do 'to do' lists as I suppose if it is all listed your OH could do things to help you! Anyway seriously, I bet you do feel like a head-less chicken as you expected the op early next year. As DD said at least it will all be done ready for a better 2014! Take care and I'll be thinking of you. (())0

Marie
You will be like a little whirlwind trying to get yourself sorted before your op (can't spell it properly so won't try, lol)...I hope you can manage to get sorted out in time, I am sure you maybe have friends who can help with the things you can;t get done in time though?
Be good to have had the op before the festive season, How far is your sister from you? I know you are in scotland so would megabus be an option?

Thanks everyone for your kind replies.
mig.............you are right time is going to fly, I am hoping though I don't run out of time or Santa wont be going down a few chimmneys. I think it is just starting to sink in :? xx
michelle..............thanks again for the update and tips. I am hoping to be driving before eight weeks as it will mean one of my nieces having to come and fetch me at Christmas which is a three hour round trip. The hair drier as well, I have alopecia and need to wash and dry hair daily to cover the baldy bits I am sure I will find a way. I will get some matting for when having meals and get a new limbo as the one I had for my finger op last year is too small but should fit once I get a splint on.
I am so pleased you are doing very well, lets hope it continues. xx
Sticky..............thank you, suppose it is the season to be jolly the anaesthetic will sort that one out, the good thing I will be sorted for new year as well as it's not my alcohol partaking hand xx
Hileena...............thanks, it will be good when its all over although will be a learning curve finding out how to do so many things with one hand hey ho will just have to get on with it. Hope the meds have sorted you out and your blood tests come back positive so you can get your op xx
Numpty...........thanks, you are right I wont have time to stress about the op, I will just stress about having no blinking(restrained myself) time to get myself totally organised, the way my luck goes I WILL be organised and they will cancel the op like they did the last time xx
DD...............thanks, you are right it will be done and dusted for the new year coming in and lets hope it is a very good year for everyone. I don't know what I would do without the support of you all on here.
Bubba...........thank you, huni I am afraid I don't have a OH, I made him redundant a few years ago as he was as useless as an ashtray on a motorbike, he would have been no good to me anyway If I get stuck with anything I am sure all you lovely people on here will help me out xx
Elaine .........thank you, I feel shattered already and this is only day two, I will get there though I am a stubborn od mare One of my friends has already offered to take a days holiday from work and take me to hospital that day and I am sure she will pop round often to get me anything I need. My sister stays too far away for the bus but I am sure if I am not driving by then one of my nieces will come and collect me and bring me home.Smile a while and while you smile
smile another smile and soon there
will be miles and miles of smiles
just because you smiled I wish your

I forgot to add...don't bother with a bra, way too hard to do up
Personally recovery still going well. I can turn a key in the ignition but still not enough grip strength and too much discomfort to drive. Maybe next week. I can also hold a mug, albeit empty and still cannot write but my left handed writing is amazing now. Saw the physio last week and I have 25kg of grip in my left hand and 5 kg in my right so quite a way to go. Saw , the consultant, very pleased with me. I have been a very good girl and carried out my exercises as instructed. Next appointment with him in February when I shall be having an X-ray on my left thumb to check it's condition which at he moment is very sore due to overuse. I am very pleased with my progress so far and shall be booking my February skiing holiday shortly.0 -

Hi Marie,
Hope it all went well and you are on the road to recovery. I am 13 weeks post op and doing almost everything that I did before the arthritis took hold. Some small things still very tricky, ironing, undoing jars holding a mug or glass and drying my hair. Very little pain unless I upset the joint. I am very pleased so far. Probably having the left thumb done next year. I am still carrying out the physio exercises and massaging the scar.
Please let us know how things are going. :presents1:

Michelle just wrote a lengthy reply and it has disappeared grrrrr. I had a bit of numbness in my thumb and saw the physio who took the huge cast off and put a splint and some bandages on but it hasn't made any difference. I spoke to the surgeon on the phone, we had discussed in clinic because I have a rare neuropathic condition she was a bit apprehensive something like this may happen, it may or may not rectify itself, apart from that I am doing really well, because it is not my dominant hand I think it has been a bit easier for me.
I am pleased you are still doing well, hopefully next year when you get your other hand done it will be a little bit easier for you. Hope you manage your skiing trip in February, keep up the good work.......Marie :candycane: xSmile a while and while you smile

I have a littler bit of numbness occasionally but it does go off. So fingers x yours resolves itself. Keep up the good work too and have a lovely Christmas :carolers:0
