Voluntary work

I've been signed off long term sick by my gp, for rheumatoid arthritis. I've worked for over 30 years for the same employer & have had ra for 35 years. Am I allowed to work in a charity shop one morning a week or may this affect my sick pay from work? Help & advice would be appreciated.
