Prednisone and cataracts

Hello lovely people!

My vision has been deteriorating for awhile and I was told this week I have cataracts from being on prednisone for close to three years. I need surgery to correct this.

Just wondering if anyone else has been through this and what your outcome was.

Anna

    Hi Anna,
I developed cataracts in both eyes after years of steroid eye drops. I had the operations 12 years ago.
My first eye was done over Christmas. Before the surgery I saw a plastic decoration on my room door but I couldn't tell you what it was. On waking up after the op in my room I could peek out of the corner of the eye patch and saw that the decoration was a Santa face, crystal clear vision straight away!
I had the second op 6 months later. This time I woke up with a thumping headache but pushed to go home, bad idea the next day I was back in with high pressure in the eye and needed medication to bring it down. I needed an op to keep the pressure low, trabeculoplasty, and it has been great ever since.
I was knocked out for the operations as I was young, early 20's, but I think it is normal to do the op under local but not sure?

Post op I remember not being allowed to bend down or do any heavy work, oh dear what a shame!

My vision was immediately cleared by having the operations. The lenses they put in are set for distance so I still needed reading glasses. After a while I needed to get glasses for driving but it is a very mild correction.
I think some scar tissue built up after a couple of years and this was removed with a laser-taking under a minute to do and completely painless!

Hope this helps, the surgery improved my vision and life, returned my vision to "normal", I hope it does the same for you.

Thank you Jenny. Sounds positive; maybe my vision will be a lot better afterward. It's really bad now.

Hope you are doing well :?:

Hi Anna, I had both eyes done last year for the same reason. I had them done 3 weeks apart and what you need to consider is what type of lens you want to be put in, i.e. do you want your sight corrected? I chose to have one distance and one reading and no longer have to wear glasses. But, of course it all depends on your age and your sight.

They do them under a local. Nothing at all to worry about but do get someone to take you home after as your eye will be covered over and, if you wear glasses, as I did, you won't be able to wear them.

I don't remember anything about bending down or lifting heavy objects but I was told I couldn't do any gardening for several weeks. This is in case you get dirt in your eye. Given that I had mine done in the spring, this was a bit frustrating.

I've had a bit of problem with inflammation which they are still dealing with but I am still thrilled with the result.

Thank you, Salamander. That puts my mind at ease.

Glad you had a good result.
