New phone scam?

I don't know if it is but, just in case.....
Phone rang saying 'International Unavailable'. I usually ignore them but, at that time of day, it can be our son in USA so I picked up. There was a brief silence then a ringing tone as if I'd just dialled out. I cut it off quickly.
This might be a variant on the automated call but I thought I'd warn everyone in case it's a means of getting the person who's receiving the unwanted call to pay for it.

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

We have had a couple of unavailable..and like you say there is a slight pause...think we must have put it down before the tone...Love

After having a spate of cold calls now we leave the answer phone on. We put names onto all the phone numbers we have so when someone calls us who we know the name comes up. So when it's unavailable or international we don't answer and let the answer-phone pick it up and if it's a true call they will leave a message and we will pick it up.0
