I've been to my fibromyalgia management course today. An anaesthetist/pain management chap came to give a talk and answer questions. It was very informative though also quite depressing to have it confirmed that no painkillers have any effect on fibro pain. He also confirmed what I already suspected, that people who have fibromyalgia experience much worse pain from arthritis than someone without fibro. According to my Xrays my arthritis in my lower spine and hip is mild...I beg to differ when it comes to the pain I feel :?

This must have come has a blow even though you knew how hard it was to get on top of fibro pain...but to be told by a specialist like this, you would have thought he could have given you some good news on top ...I think that the way forward for Fibro is like you are doing pain management, there is so much you can do to help yourself, but its not easy when in constant pain... I don't have Fibro but I do get a lot of pain from most joints...so I do feel for you having both...hope you can get some relief very soon

Thanks Barbara, it is hard being in pain every minute of the day isn't it? I have used an elbow crutch when my knee is really bad or my back is unbearable, so I decided to buy myself a pretty stick. I used it for the first time on saturday to visit our local farmers market. Not only did it seem to make my back pain worse but the top of my right arm, shoulder and neck has been in agony since. I don't know what else I could use, any suggestions? Thanks, Deb x

I used a stick before my THR, but have found that crutches help you to walk more stable..not sure about you but I was twisting has I walk with a stick ..at the min I am on two crutches they do help my back, but my arthoplasty nurse or hip nurse has said that using crutches for so long is not good for the back or the legs..its a no win...have you tried a walker the, I have been told to try one but the last time I felt has though I was bending and had a bad posture .
Have you been referred to a pain clinic at all, not sure about fibro what they could do but its worth a go..you take care..xx

    Hi Deb
I agree about the stick.......I bought a very pretty one but it is useless for me.
I'm much better with crutches....I know I've had a THR and a fracture in that hip 4 weeks post op......but like Barbara the ortho says I should only be using one crutch {I also have spinal problems} but nurses say use what is the most comfortable.
Physio says if it gets you about use 2 crutches....so who do you listen to??
I do have a 4 wheel rollator......I used it before my THR but I've tried using it since and cant......really hurts my arms especially the opposite one to the THR
    You take care
