Painful fingers

For some months my brother has been suffering from swollen and painful fingers and various doctors on the NHS have told him it's either arthritis or RSI and to take anti inflams and rest his hands, which is a really difficult thing to do as he works full time.
So, in the end he went down the Private route. He has been diagnosed as having two badly damaged discs at the top of his neck and they are interfering with the nerves to his hands and is being referred privately to a neuro specialist as quickly as possible.
I'm so pleased he has got a positive diagnosis and hope something can be done to help alleviate the problem, but I can't help but wonder if a diagnosis would ever have been made on the NHS.
Hope everybody is enjoying this absolutely beautiful September weather.
