Sometimes GPs have to be cruel to be kind but you never know, they may improve your walking. I don't know if you have to go anywhere as such, I would have thought he would measure and write a script but if you have to get them for yourself then do your own measures. Have a look on-line and see what those who sell these things suggest. Good luck and I hope they help - I know what you mean by disliking tightness on the body but sometimes needs must. DD

Detest the things with a passion is is the actual surgical ones or the compression ones you get on prescription ?
I have had numerous Dvts and because mine always rolled the GP advised me not to wear them as they could have restricted blood flow

    Hi Marianne

I have those thigh length compression stockings, one pair even in a packet unused. :o:wink: The packet is dated 2001, shows how long ago I went down that route and gave up with them years ago now.

It does say on the packet to be measured by a healthcare professional. I cannot remember who measured me. You should be measured at the ankle, calf and thigh and foot size needs to be known too. A nurse at the surgery seems a good bet unless the pharmacist is willing and you do not mind. I got them on prescription. I vaguely remember I was allowed so many pairs a year on prescription. They were Scholl ones and I made sure I got the black ones.

There is the problem of keeping them up though. ;) You need a suspender belt unless since 2001, things have progressed. ;)

Happy days, Marianne, I did find them comfortable, I remember but an almighty hassle.

I've never grasped the thinking behind knee-length compression stockings after an op. Isn't that tight band at the top more likely to give us a blood clot than prevent one :? I dislike all but prefer the full length ones.

    Hi Marianne

I just googled these compression hosiery and they are £24.00 a pair if you do not get them on a script like I did. They do still need a suspender belt though I am afraid, when reading the reviews about them. So nothing has changed there in 14 years or so. I was prescribed them for aching legs due to varicose veins. They definitely did help me and I used them for a time when I was working but stopped using them in the end. Hence one brand new packet which I have kept. I should wear them but .............. I do not. I have had countless VV ops in my time. Should really go down that road again, sometime......
