Hip Arthritis

Hello everyone, not been on much lately as life has been hectic and time has been running away with me.

Anyhoo...I have OA in my hip (xray evidence on right hip, left hip wasn't xrayed but same pain etc so assuming it is bilateral). Up until quite recently the pain from my hip has been intermittent which I was very grateful for as it is the worst of all the pain I get. But, on Wednesday night I was woken with severe pain in my right hip joint (groin), radiating down the front of my thigh and into my knee. It felt as if someone had hold of my femur and was twisting it around, a hot grinding searing pain. Despite codeine and hot water bottle the pain wouldn't ease until I managed to fall asleep around 6.30am. Since then, the 'echo' of that pain has been there constantly, a bearable ache in my groin and thigh, which is a progression as previously there has been no pain in between 'episodes'.

So...is this normal for progressive OA? How bad does it have to be before a replacement is a possibility? Bearing in mind I am 46 and I know they don't like doing them in 'younger' patients.

I have a long awaited apt at the pain clinic on Tuesday so I am hoping they will be able to help; what treatments have you found helpful for this type of OA?

Thanks in advance

x

Hello again, ouch. I can't remember back to my pre-THR days but I do think the Pain Clinic is your best bet for answers. I hope it goes well.

This sounds like par for the course to me - I cannot remember intermittent pain but the constant stuff is familiar. I hope the pain clinic can help and don't discount a replacement, there's a chap on here aged 46 who had one hip done last year. DD

Hello everyone and thanks for the replies.

The hip pain remained as a background ache, but wouldn't you know it...today I bent slightly just to move a bin and yowzer...something in my lower spine 'popped' and left me in immediate agony. I had to go out today, something that couldn't be put off, and could only just manage it on crutches. I do have a ruptured disc in my lower spine so whether that has worsened, or another one has gone or what I don't know. I'm currently sat trying not to cough (the remnants of a chest infection I had recently) as the pain is indescribable when I do.

It will be interesting tomorrow at the pain clinic to see which pain they want to concentrate on!
