Hi. Can anyone please tell me if you get a catching feeling in the joint of your knee or ankle when you walk and if your OA affects tendon pain/lumps at the tendons?
Any replies would be very much appreciated. :P

Hello seeking diagnosis and welcome to the forum.

My OA came as a result of many years of RA so causes and effects, tendon and ligament damage, were all mixed up together for me. What I do know for sure is that, prior to having my knees replaced, they used to feel as if they were on a kind of ratchet when it came to bending them ie when I sat down they took forever to bend to a 'natural' angle and just seemed to go one bit at a time. Is this the sort of thing you mean?

Hi sickywicket, thanks for the reply. What do you mean rachet??!
I've posted a more in depth post about my situation, which is awaiting approval, so please could you look out for it?
It feels like the joints are catching on something and they are about to click but don't. Be better for you to read my recent post if possible, I would really appreciate that.
Did you get positive blood results straight away for your RA?
    Thanks again. :D:D:D

By ratchet I mean it felt, when trying to bend my knee, as if the joint was creeping down a 'toothed' mechanism, one tooth at a time.

I was diagnosed 'immediately' aged 15 but I had had 'rheumatic fever' four years previously.

See you on your other post :D

I am in a similar situation to Sticky in that I have two kinds of arthritis, OA and an auto-immune version: the joint damage of the latter has led to the former. I can tell the pain apart but not the tendon issues: I have Achilles tendonitis in both heels, plus bone spurs, plus plantar fasciitis in my right heel. I don't know why they've occurred but they are probably due to one arthritis or the other. Bending my knees is OK-ish but trying to straighten them after a period of being seated is far more problematic. DD

    Hi dreamdaisy.
Thank you! I'm sorry you suffer so much. With your bone spurs, can you see them? Or was it just picked up on a scan? Are they visible when you look at your ankles?

They were discovered via Xray, my knees now look mis-shapen, especially on the outside of the joints and the back of my heels are slowly changing shape but I'm not bothered - I have bigger arthritic fish to fry. Do you know if you have OA or are you in limbo at the moment? From your user name I guess it's the latter but we cannot diagnose, only provide examples from our own experiences. I freely admit I am not one to indulge in over-analysis of what's causing what, as far as I'm concerned it's here (the auto-immune came courtesy of my parents) and the OA as a result, c'est la vie. :) DD

    Hello again :D
I suspect OA or AS. I'm hoping the back specialist on Monday will agree to my desire for an MRI. It's been going on for years now, I just need to know. I appreciate that you can't diagnose, just good to share experiences.
I'm a bit concerned about the lump I have on my tendon, (think it's my tendon, am unsure, thinking bone spur, but don't think I'd be able to feel that).
    Thanks.

    Hi,

I have RA, and haven`t really got any advice to offer - I hope you can get your scan, and that it provides some answers.

Re the lump on your Achilles tendon - have you injured it at all? I only ask because long before I had RA, when I did a lot of sport, I had a lump on my left Achilles, which was caused by wear & tear and ultimately required surgery. The lump was very painful to touch.

Hi theresak and thanks, it's nice to know someone is reading my post and comment!
Do you suffer a lot with your RA, do you manage to keep it under control?
Yes the lump is very painful (and worrying). So are you saying your tendon problems is from your sport/wear and tear or RA aswell? :D

    Hi there,

My RA is reasonably well controlled at present - with nasty 'glitches' now and again, thanks for asking.

The Achilles trouble was long before I had RA. I was teaching PE, and playing hockey, tennis & badminton as well. I ruptured one Achilles, so had surgery on it, and my surgeon told me then that the other one was showing signs of wear & tear, hence the lump. Twelve months later I had that one repaired. I've had no trouble with either of them since -RA has not affected them at all.

    Hope you get sorted.

    Tezz x

    That's good Tezz.
What a shame rupturing your tendon, were you not able to bear weight on it?
    Thanks for the replies x

Hello and welcome from me too
I have OA in my knees and I was having that exact 'catching' sensation until I had an arthroscopy in September which removed the spurs and it has been much smoother since. still hurts though ;-)

Yes I had clicky knees and pain sometimes with that. I had grade 4 O/A both knees and needed 2 replacements. In the end they "locked" incredibly painful, reason why I gave in and had surgery . My dad's knees always clicked but he wasn't diagnosed with O/A, he might have had it though I suppose.
