Sock Aids

I know. I know  I've probably been using them longer than anyone on the forum and therein lies my problem.

My original one is now more duck tape than plastic. The 'tape' that threads through the holes is an old bootlace. One of the holes that the tape threads through is now more hole than duck tape. One good tug will see it come through the rest of the plastic. It is, in short, an ex-sock aid.

However, I've never found a replacement I could use bearing in mind my ankles are fused in approx. 1.55 (am or pm  ) position and not much moves down there.

Modern aids are not as wide as mine, their 'waistlines' are too near the leg end (mine is literally halfway) and they have an indentation in the middle of the leg end which the tape always rides over rendering them useless.

I actually got a local plastics firm to make me one based on my old faithful but the plastic was much too rigid.

Any suggestions? (I'm ruling out surgery  )

Oh heck, this is a tricky one for me for a number of reasons but hey, that's never stopped me replying to someone, eh?

Right, here comes an off-the-wall-thought (which probably won't work). I know that one can buy memory foam insoles which you place in the oven to warm through and then stand on so they 'learn' the shape of the foot (obviously they then have to cool down). I wonder if summat similar could be done with your sock-aid? I freely admit I don't know by whom but it's a germ (of a non-sneezy variety) of an idea. DD

Thanks for the link, Barbara. There are certainly types to investigate there.

DD, the inventor? I once had some knee braces that they made that way. I think. Thigh to calf so-and-sos. Cries of “Where's me right leg gone?” resounding through the house as the kids liked them more than I did  I think my main problem is co-ordination – the feet go one way and the hands want to pull another. I don't know whether I'm coming or going. Twas ever thus

What did they do with them? :? I've had another thought. After your bath don a clean pair of socks and leave them on all the time until the next bath. :balloon: DD

What did they do with them? Sword fights, cricket, rolling cars down inside them. What didn't they do with them?

Yup, I once tried socks in bed. I don't remember why but I do remember I couldn't turn over  Well, my feet couldn't. They just stuck.

I've spotted one that might work. It's a bright, sunny, get-the-day-started yellow and a weird shape – just like me :D
