Hummingbirds on prescription?

I've been here (Los Angeles) over a week now and these little guys just entrance me every day. Talk about distraction therapy! I've seen the odd one on previous visits but here, by our son's latest apartment, they're just whizzing and hovering all day long. I counted 8 at once on the next door neighbour's sugar solution feeders as I was munching on my salad. It's Hummingbird Starbucks. It should be available on prescription.

I needed them after our worst ever journey. North Sea gales resulted in a delayed first flight, my first ever air sickness, two missed connections, 5 hrs unscheduled sleep in Atlanta and a lost wheelchair. The latter was dealt with by a superb combination of efficiency and compassion by Carmam at Delta's lost luggage dept and my own was delivered, and the loan one taken away, three days later.

There's also the small matter of the stairs - 6 from the garage to ground level, 9 from groumd to apartment and 12 up to bed. Plus a vital bottom shover who keeps forgetting to shove. Or tries to combine shoving me with one hamd while carrying a heavy 6 pack in the other. I sometimes wonder, if either I or the beer came adrift, which would he prioritise.I am doing very little walking as I have to ensure I can tackle the stairs at bedtime.

Meanwhile, sun, blue skies, the beer, the hummingbirds amd a 5yr old bumdle of perpetual motion (Did he learn it from the hummingbirds? Might it work for me?) are all any arthritic needs to wake up thinking Another lovely day in Paradise.

I wish you all well but I'm not rushing back.

Hummingbird therapy sounds great, and also after the endurance test of your journey much needed! Sorry to hear about all the stairs but I hope you are being well looked after. Relax and enjoy, you deserve it.

I'm surprised you have to ask which would be saved first: the beer, obviously.

The flights out sound dreadful but I guess it was all worth it now. I cannot compete with hummingbirds but I find the dull, domestic selection on offer here quite entertaining! The sunshine, however - I do envy you that. DD

Hello SW, the Californian sunshine - and the hummingbirds - sounds wonderful, though I'm sorry you had such a bad flight & the nuisance of the missing wheelchair.

I hope you have a lovely time with your family, and can't blame you for not rushing back - all family time is precious. My two small grandsons spent five hours yesterday in the nets, practicing for the forthcoming season with their father - who was k.......d afterwards!

Humming birds sound like a winning therapy. Especially after such a horrific journey. Have a wonderful time. Don't blame you not rushing back.

Hello SW I was wondering what your journey had been like, I know it usually goes well with plenty of help, but suppose they cant do anything about the weather and delays...but what a lovely distraction..I have never seen or heard an hummingbird..it does sound idyllic :D you carry on enjoying...x

If I have my geography correct I believe that Venice Beach is within a reasonable driving distance . . . . . . 8) DD

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.

DD -Of course the beer would win. I know my place.

Tezz- Mine too. Yesterday. First match the Sunday before we return. Also the say of the little fellow 's last baseball match. A good day in prospect.

Mig -we shall be at Venice Beach this week. I think Muscle Beach will be quiet mid-weekk but I can get you some 'Medicinal Marijuana' if required. I prefer to get high om the acres of ivory sand, palm trees, blue sky, blue ocean and blue hills in the distance. ( And the lycra.).

This post brings back good memories of the summers I spent in New Jersey and Virginia, very interesting and sometimes funny birds to watch. Especially when they fight/play with each other.

    Beer every time.

Hummingbirds on prescription, yes please, so much nicer than the usual range of meds offered. They are so fascinating and beautiful. I found them so entrancing I even got one tattooed - it was a wedding present from my cousin and they are supposed to signify new beginnings so quite appropriate in a round about, not like being given a dinner service, kind of way.

    Oh wow Sticky ...

When did you travel? - I wonder if I passed you in the air lol as we got back to England last Thursday from Arizona! hahaha

I hate delays :/ we were very lucky this time - last time we had a delay due to a weather front and the time dragged - it was awful.

I had an amazing close encounter with hummingbirds at the desert botanic gardens in phoenix and again I saw many in tucson too. They are so beautiful and so very busy.... I got some photo's of them but they all look annoyed when they are perched, they have the most sweet little faces!!

I hope you have a nice break and the warm dry climate does you good. It seems to have made me feel great.

Maybe I can get a house in Arizona as well as a hummingbird on prescription!:wink:

    Keep well!!

    Best wishes

I'm glad I've unintentionaly managed to bring back happy memories for so many of you.

My other dil, im Scotland, has a thing about puffins. I can see why.

A house im Arizona on prescription, charleeh? I like an optimist.

I haven't minded delayed flights up to, now. Last time we were put up in a swish hotel and flown out business class next day. This time, because of the weather, the hotels were all full and they were shoving people on any flight going in vaguely the right direction.

    Sticky I love Puffins too!!

Last year I managed 4 days in Northumberland visiting the Farne Islands - I got so close to the puffins it was amazing. I got pecked and pooped on by a tern too -

I am so glad I am getting things done while I am well enough to though I must admit.

    How was your return journey??

The journey back was seamless, thanks, charleeh. Even the hours in Amsterdam passed gently. A far cry from the outward one and very welcome.

I think it's a great and sensible plan to get things done while you can. Carry on 'doing' :D
