A new study from Brazil has indicated that injections of ozone gas can offer therapeutic benefits for knee osteoarthritis patients.
Led by the Federal University of Sao Paulo, the research saw subjects given ozone injections into the knee to determine if it could reduce pain and improve functioning and quality of life for these patients.
A total of 98 people were followed during the course of the study, with 63 of the participants receiving ten ml injections of ozone throughout the study, while 35 received ten ml injections of air as a placebo.
Subjects were assessed at the beginning of the study, as well as after their fourth and eight injections and eight weeks after their last injection, with the evaluation including signs of changes in pain, function and the ability to sit, stand and walk, as well as other quality of life indicators.
According to results presented at the American College of Rheumatology's annual meeting, the group on ozone therapy had significantly better results in tests that measured pain, function, and overall health, with substantial improvements throughout the course of the study.
Meanwhile, a further evaluation showed participants in the ozone group reported improvement in all areas that pertain to quality of life after their fourth injection.
Study leaders Carlos Cesar Lopes de Jesus and Virginia Fernandes Moca Trevisani, at the Federal University of Sao Paulo, said: "We think the work means that ozone can give the patient a better quality of life with less pain and more independence in daily life activities. Ozone is also capable of delaying the need for joint replacement surgery. It is a tool for the clinician to reduce pain or to help control it.
