I have ankylosing spondylitis which is very painful and at times I can hardly move at all when there is a flare up.
I have been wondering whether it is best to try to do some exercise or is it possible that it will make it worse?

I am also spina bifida but I have been very active for most of my life but since the age of about 70 (I'm now 82) I have been suffering with AS which is gradually getting worse.

    Good morning Charisse,

You question about exercise is a good one. To help you I have attached a link to the Arthritis Care information about exercise:

    https://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/managing-arthritis/diet-and-exercise/exercise-and-arthritis

If in doubt it could be worthwhile contacting one of your health care team; GP, Rheumatology Nurse etc for advice or referral to a physiotherapist for an opinion on your specific circumstances.

    Best wishes

    Ellen.

Oh dear charisse, I am very sorry to read your post, this must be a very tough time for you indeed. I don't have AS but I can empathise with the pain, discomfort and maybe frustration as things become harder to do. Exercise is important but it's a matter of finding the right kind and I think Ellen has made a good point - the best people to advise you are your GP and a physio because your situation is unique. I wish you very well and I hope the AS can be brought under control. DD

Thanks for the posts and I have had some input form the Gp and a physiotherapist but I was hoping for some info from someone who has been through the same thing and can let me know how they fared.
I went to a six weeks course for people who suffered from back pain for various reasons and the first thing we were advised to do was exercise and by the end of the six weeks I was in a lot worse state than when I started! .. fact is that not all specialists have the answers despite their knowledge sometimes real life is a better teacher.

Hello again, I am so sorry that things are not further forward for you despite your best efforts to make things better. The human body is a law unto itself in that what helps one won't help another but I agree that the specialists understand theory, not reality. I wish you well. DD
