What do you have on your porridge?

Since moving to the Borders, and having several days where the frost has never lifted from dawn to dusk, I've realised why the Scóts are so fond of porridge. Because it's hot, it's super quick (pour some in a bowl, chuck in the raisins, add water and microwave for a few minutes) and sets you up for the day.

As a child I used to put sugar or even Golden Syrup on porridge but now I prefer the healthier option of raisins. But that can get a bit boring day in and day out.

Suggestions please. Preferably sugar-free and salt-free ones.

Ooh Barbara, I like that. I have dried apricots in the cupboard and they'd make a nice change.

Oddly enough, although I love putting banana and flaked almonds on Bran Flakes, it never occured to me to put banana with porridge.

    Thank you.

Mr DD opts for a small twist of salt and larger one of black pepper as he does not have a sweet tooth. I don't do pidge (one very small boy I once knew couldn't say porridge so pidge it has been for over 30 years).

It seems to me that it's a forgiving foodstuff when it comes to combining flavours so why not experiment with various fruits, dried or fresh, syrup, treacle, nuts etc.? DD

I used to have golden syrup on my porridge when I was young but now I just leave it plain. Porridge on its own is lovely enough and I've never felt the need to add anything.

Thanks everyone for some great suggestions. I love cinnamon so don't know why I didn't think of it.

Our four-day frost has finally melted but I shall be porridging more often than before so I'll bear in mind your suggestions.

I used to make it with a pinch of salt then add sugar and cow's milk in the bowl. Now I don't ever use salt, sugar or cow's milk so now it's porridge with only soya milk. Might try the cinnamon though.

I do love it with golden syrup or how about grated chocolate (yum, yum!) but I will try cinnamon as I bet that is lovely as well.
