Osteoarthritis and gout.

I have o/a in my knees and left wrist. I may have it in my right wrist but it is deformed due to a tumour and having part of my radius replaced with my fibula. My question is can you have gout in your wrist at the same time as osteoarthritis. I ask this because I had pain in my wrist and arm that had to be calmed by taking oramorph. I have never known another pain like it (worse than childbirth) I have only ever had gout once before and it was in the same wrist after being prescribed water tablets. I am petrified of it happening again.

Hi Smartieclarky,
Welcome to the forum. I have no answer for you I'm afraid, gout hasn't ever affected me, but I have had children so I can understand very well that you don't want it back again. It seems (from the NHS website) that if you've had it once it can recur, they suggest you should always have some medication ready at hand for pain relief and to reduce inflammation.

I do hope it settles very soon - whatever it is
Take care

Hi Smartieclark,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing such high pain levels and as yet are unsure of the cause. To answer your question, yes it is possible to have more than one type of arthritis at a time (including OA and gout). It sounds as if your situation is a complex one but hopefully your GP will be able to confirm the diagnosis.
In the meantime, you may find it helpful to read Arthritis Care’s information on OA of the wrist https://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/do-i-have-arthritis/publications/671-osteoarthritis-of-the-hand-and-wrist and gout https://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/do-i-have-arthritis/publications/230-gout.
If it would help to talk things over, I hope you will call the Helplines (0808 800 4050, Monday – Friday 9.30am – 5pm).
