what is the cause of inflammation, swelling and pain in the middle joint of the little finger?
I have had inflammation, swelling and pain in the joint between the middle and proximal bones of my little finger for the past six months, an xray showed I am bone on bone. The pain started when I caught the finger in a door handle, it felt as if it had dislocated. It's my fault that I initially didn't seek medical help, I assumed the injury would sort itself out - it didn't ! I needed to see my GP again but Covid 19 has shut everything down in France. I've had osteoarthritis for the past 30 years in many joints and have had numerous surgeries. including joint replacements and spinal fusions but I've never before experienced this kind of swelling and pain in a finger joint. Everything I do in the house or garden causes further pain and swelling, I constantly knock the finger because it won't bend and it basically gets in the way of everything I need to do. Can anyone please suggest what might be the cause and any thoughts about what I should do about further diagnostics once the virus pandemic is over. Thank you !

I am not a doc but two thoughts come to mind: it could be an infection deep in the joint caused by the dislocation or it could also be the beginnings of an inflammatory auto-immune arthritis. In the UK general medicine is still operating albeit somewhat differently but I gather that France has been more stringent in shutting stuff down. I am sorry I cannot be of more use. DD

thank you dreamdaisy, it's good of you to reply. The thought of infection or an auto immune arthritis is scary but you may be right, it's definitely a lot more painful than OA, it wakes me during the night. France has draconian lock down measures in place, as and when things improve I'll go back to the GP. Thanks again. M in D

I have psoriatic plus osteoarthritis, the meds for the first do nothing for the second and why would they? The two are lumped together under the umbrella term arthritis but are quite different in cause and effect. I have been flattened today by OA pain due to a massive drop in temperature and barometric pressure but I knew that was coming so it has been easier to deal with. I suspect that what you are experiencing is more infection-ny than arthritis-sy (told you I'm not a doc!) but surely the sooner you can get this checked the better. I think France is a week or so ahead of the UK in terms of lockdown and with Italy and Spain beginning to relax their measures hopefully France will soon follow. Good luck and please let us know how you get on. DD

thank you for your support, in all these years this is the first time I've sought online help, I'm riddled with OA but with medication and retirement, I can accept the bad days with the better. This additional problem has baffled me because it's so different and is a lot more painful, so your comments have been useful. I doubt President Macron is going to relax measures any time soon, the daily death nos. are still far too high. I'll keep you posted about my progress ..... take care, hope you stay virus free.
