Hi guys.

My rheumatologist contacted me today and informed me that I have significant arthritis in my hips. My left hip is very bad and I likely need surgery. I have to start taking methotrexate and need steroid injections. Both these are going to damage my immune system and they have horrid side effects. I've been crying and I'm really scared, more like terrified.

Hi @LHindhaugh firstly let me welcome you to the forum I hope you find the information and support you are after from our wonderful community.

I can see from your post that you are going through a scary period having just received a diagnosis of hip arthritis. You are not alone it is normal to feel apprehensive when newly diagnosed. You also mention that you are to start on methotrexate and steroids as initial treatment, which are common treatments and while they affect everyone differently, the possible side effects can be scary, lots of people manage well on these medications.

The site is full of information and I wanted to signpost you to some information to start with. Hopefully this will help you understand a little more about what you are going through. Firstly, information on everything about hip arthritis; then links to both Methotrexate and steroids.

Please feel free to search the forum for others with similar experiences and I am sure that some of our community will be able to help offer some useful suggestions.

Take care and I hope you get some relief and answers soon.

    Thanks

    Joe

Hi @LHindhaugh , I’m sorry you’re feeling so scared. It can be a lot to take in getting this diagnosis, I had very advanced OA in my hip and had hip replacement last year. I had a steroid injection about 5 months before surgery, but sadly in my case I got no benefit from it at all, although I know some people are helped by it. But I also had no side effects from it at all. I think these injections are less problematic than long term steroid treatments in that respect, although obviously I don’t know your medical history.

Do talk this through with your GP or rheumatologist, who have far more experience than Dr Google, who tends to scare everyone. They may be able to put your fears in perspective and put your mind at rest.
