Hi Everyone

I have OA everywhere, but worst in my lower back. After being out of work for the last couple of months I've just accepted a job which means I'm going to be on my feet all the time (as opposed to me sitting at a desk which would be my normal work environment).

I'm now getting concerned how I'm going to cope as I get excruciating back pain when stood for long periods, I need this job but really don't know what to do.

Anyone got any tips to help relieve the pain at work please.

Thanks

Did you tell your future employer about your health condition? Employers are legally required to make reasonable adjustments to take account of one's disability. If you did not have to complete a health questionnaire as part of the application process and the subject of health did not crop up then they have to make reasonable adjustments once they are aware of any disability. If, however, you lied about your condition, they could argue there has been a breach of the duty of mutual trust and confidence and potentially some dishonesty which could result in disciplinary action and, in some circumstances, employment could be fairly and lawfully terminated.

Thanks for your response, it was very informative and much appreciated.

I didn't disclose it and no health questionnaire was provided, so once I'm settled in, hopefully I may be able to approach the Manager for a discussion and find a solution. I will of course fill out any documentation accurately should I receive it.

I had another job interview recently and it seemed to be going well, but I did mention my illness and his manner seemed to change when I did, needless to say I didn't get that job, wouldn't want to work for someone like that anyway!

Thanks again for your advice. ☺

    Hi @Lin,

I thought this link might be useful if you've not already visited our website:

I appreciate that it's not practical to adopt many of the suggested exercises whilst at work but some you might be able to.

    Best Wishes

Standing for long periods particularly with a bad back is as bad, if not worse than sitting for long periods. You really must make time in your day to move around, perhaps do a couple of the exercises recommended for bad backs just to loosen you up.

I'll do my best, guess I'm not going to know the set up till I start, not had to bring it to attention before, I've always 'suffered in silence' which I know a lot of us do, but it's getting to the point where I might not be able to do that.

    Thank you for your advice.
