Hi @JohnBaxter and welcome to the online community,
You have arthritis in your knee, have had a steroid injection that only lasted for six weeks and have been told that gel is your only other option for the pain.
Many of our members have experience of living with knee arthritis, and I'm sure they'll be along to suggest ways that you can deal with the pain and help keep your joint mobile. I wonder if you could talk to your GP or consultant again and ask to be referred to a pain clinic? There they will look at all options to help keep your joint flexible and less painful. This includes medication, self help exercises and physiotherapy.
The Versus Arthritis website has several pages on knee pain, including some useful exercises that you can do to strengthen the muscles. Here are the links:
Do have a look round the forum, post any questions you have and join in whenever you feel comfortable,

Hi John.
I too have osteoarthritis in my right knee and know just how you feel.
For longer lasting pain relief, my Doctor prescribed Naproxen. This does help a lot, as before I was only taking Ibuprofen.
I also had physio and was given specific exercises to do, which I admit I don't do everyday, but over the last two months they seem to be helping.
All I can say is just take one day at a time, as no two days are the same regarding pain relief. I would suggest that you talk to your Doctor again regarding pain relief. Sometimes you have to be persistent!
Take care.
