My GP prescribed via local Chemist pharmacy Vitamin D tablets. Firstly i read on NHS website that only if vitamin D combined with Vitamin K is the D effective substitute? for lack of sunlight in Northern Scotland. Is there such a thing as best quality Vitamin D eg Health food shops Natures own but huge price £20 small bottle eg 20-30 tablets obviously i would have to pay for with great difficulty presently moneywise. Any suggestions for foods o0f either group D i think i do but K foods. I learnt Special K cereal has No Vit K just D. Any comments please.I have large D deficiency just diagnosed despite my Dogs walks.

I take a calcium/vit D supplement prescribed by my GP but I can find no reference on the Health Scotland site mentioning combining Vit D with Vit K. If you want more Vit K could you just eat lots of greens? They're full of it.

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

When my blood tests revealed I was low in vitamin D a couple of years ago, I went about finding high quality ones, as I didn’t want to chance supermarket ones.

It’s important to take vitamin D3 not just vitamin ‘D’.

I settled on PharmaNord Bio-Vitamin D3 - they are little olive oil filled capsules (olive oil helps with the body absorption of the D3)

They were chosen for clinical trials for evaluating the effect of vit D against Coronavirus - that convinced me enough that they were high quality!

My GP advised which IU strength to take, since taking them daily through the last two Autumn/Winters all my blood tests since have shown my Vitamin D to be at the correct level even in winter. I buy them direct through [xxxx].

Hi @GalaxyA12 perhaps asking your GP to prescribe vitamin D tablets or asking which would be the best ones to take which meet your needs with a large vitamin D deficiency?

Do remember, we are not medically qualified to give a diagnosis. The best people to ask are either your doctor or pharmacist.

I live in Wales, originally from Scotland, so much rain and not much sun in both places! My vitamin D count was very low at a GP assessment a couple of years ago, just before Covid, - she said Vitamin D was "zilch!"

She told me to get Vitamin D3. I get them at the supermarket - much cheaper. I was told that other supplements don't really help but to get outside as much as possible and eat a diet with lots of fruit and veg and drink milk.

With my fair skin sunbathing isn't an option - I turn onto a lobster! So each day when it isn't wet, even if cloudy, I get out for a wee bit - even into the garden. Was also told to do weight bearing exercises (such as is on the "Let's Move" videos was helpful). As I child I used to have "Sun-R" treatment - anyone remember that?

You can spend a fortune on expensive supplements, said my GP, that don't actually do much good (although if you feel they do, it is your choice).

So D3, sun (sea & sangria.........!!!!) and lovely fruit & veg.

As well as some fruit and veg, good vitamin D sources include oily fish, egg.

In summer I try and get morning and late afternoon sun, rather than around the midday hours where the UV is too high.
