Hello all

I've joined this group to find out a little more about my condition.

I have not been officially diagnosed with arthritis but many health professionals have said I probably do have it.

I have severe low back pain due to spondylitis and bulging discs.. I also have chronic knee pain in my left leg.

Some days are pretty good but without warning the pain will surface and totally ruin my day.

I regularly have online consolations with a pain clinic professional and have a monthly face to face with a physiotherapist.

I have been off work for over 6 months with my most recent reoccurrence but am due to return next week.

I work as a plumber and am very apprehensive about my return because at 60 years of age I can only see me making things worse but unfortunately financially I need to reinstate my funds.

Anyone have any tips on how to get through the working day with as little problems as possible?

Thank you

    Hi @Craig61

Welcome to our online community and thank you for asking for our support.

You tell that you have an informal diagnosis of arthritis (perhaps osteoarthritis?) as well as significant problems with your lower back. The level of pain that are experiencing and the impact that is having on your ability to earn sound very difficult and distressing.

Without a more specific diagnosis of arthritis it is tricky to know what information on the Versus Arthritis website will be of help. This page on on osteoarthritis of the knee may be a good place to start -

I assume that since you are in contact with the pain clinic you are receiving the most appropriate pain medication - are they taking into account the knee pain as well as your low back pain?

As a general rule any frequent gentle exercise is helpful for controlling pain - getting out every day for an easy walk helps me deal with my arthritis.

If you are not able to work are you able to find things to do that you enjoy? - distraction is one of the best kinds of pain relief - there are some useful ideas on this page -

I hope that others in the community are able to suggest useful strategies - please look in on us regularly and let us know how you are getting on.

    Very best wishes
