Hi .Pauline here. I have worked all my life standing n my legs. Have always had pain in my legs since I was 30. Paid to have my leg veins done hoping to be able to sleep and be pain free. Just gave up my job at Christmas as I could not physically do it. So gutted. But then to find I have osteoarthritis in both my knees. I am in constant pain, even trying to sleep is a nightmare. Just told to take paracetamol and exercise. But still unsure what exercise! For knees! I want to be able to live with this, and be as active as possible.. any help appreciate

Hi @active3 . I see that you have just been given a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and advised to take paracetamol and exercise. The pain in your legs has been with you for 30 years and has got bad enough for you to give up work. You find sleeping a problem.

The point with exercise is that it builds up the muscles around your knee, making it better supported and function more easily. You could ask your GP for a referral to a Physiotherapist. Here are some links link to information on our website which you nay find useful:

There are many others in the Community that have had experiences that will be relevant to you and you can find as you browse.

    Hi Pauline.

Sorry to hear that you have osteoarthritis in both knees. I have it only in my right knee and that is bad enough, so I know how you feel.

As Tom says, exercise does help build up and strengthen the muscles. I was sent to Physio by my Dr. and find that the exercises do help, although you have to be patient as it takes a few months to feel any difference. My Dr. also prescribed me Naproxen and Omeprazole (to help protect the stomach lining ) and this helps, although I only take when the pain gets too much, otherwise I take a Paracetamol in the morning to help me start the day. It doesn't affect me too much at night, but I still keep waking and trying to get comfortable again is quite frustrating. I know there are other lovely people on here who can give you advice re. sleeping.

All I can say is that you are not alone with this and we are all here to help each other. 🙂

    Take care.
