Confusing and disappointing discharge from orthopaedic consultant

Follow up today following a cortisone injection in hip 6 weeks ago with no improvement. Consultant said his conclusion was the pain is coming from my back and not the hips and my proctitis from previous radiotherapy is adding to the pain. I had decompression surgery in 2019 with good results until May 21. Hip consultant said I needed new hip in first appointment after seeing X-rays then did CT scan and advised it was mild arthritis in both hips and to try hip injection. Today said nothing can be done from their view and will discharge me back to GP. I’m disappointed in the mixed messages and will wait to see what the letter says. I had to ask if it was down to spinal stenosis and he said yes. Either referral to Physio or pain clinic is my optio.

    Hi @PJ123

I'm so sorry you have had a disappointing result with the orthopaedic consultant. If you feel like you have received mixed messages and aren't happy with what the letter says when you receive it, would you consider asking for a second opinion? Might be worth having a think about especially if the treatment they have given you has made no difference to you, as you say.

    Hi Anne

thank you for your reply. I will be following this up with the Physio or pain clinic whichever the GP refers me too. I ll def be requesting an MRI of my hips. The spinal consultant referred me to orthopaedic hip surgeon after a review of MRI lumber spine and now they say it’s that causing the pain and no further spinal treatment can be done. I ll let you know how I go on.

Way back, in my earlier arthritic years, if one consultant decided you didn't fall under his remit he could reder you to another in a different specialty. Now they must discharge you back to your GP for him to decide. It's all to do with who foots the bill - hospital or GP practice.

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    hi stickywicket,

if they refer me back to MSK team I ll request an MRI of hips and Lumber then they might be able to decide what is causing such pain. If it is a deterioration of my spinal stenosis then fine but I need effective pain management. Thanks for your comment anyway. It’s blooming depressing.
