Looking for suggestions or tips
I have arthritis in both knees and I’m 51 and the dr says I need two knee replacements but I’m too young atm for this. He’s giving me cortisone shots I go back at ends month. I want to not have these replacements yet and I need tips on what else I can do, exercising etc. I use to be an avid runner running marathons and well I can’t run anymore! Knee replacements will have to be done but I don’t want it at this moment! I’ll be starting physical therapy next week. Any tips or suggestions will help thank you

I've has OA in both knees for years and think that staying strong and flexible is important. I do yoga for flexibility, cycle and walk. I always use walking poles which takes a lot of pressure off the knees, particularly going down hill. I've also found that the severity of pain varies. Sometimes I stand at the top of the stairs and have to grit my teeth to get down, at other times it's nothing like as bad. I think you just have to keep going. If you stop trying to move the joints they just get worse. By keeping the surrounding muscles strong you may be surprised what you can manage to do. Good luckwith the physio.

@Fif hi 👋,
Ive just read your comments about keeping mobile. I’ve got arthritis in both hips, mainly in my right. I’ve been advised to exercise etc but after a full day working with children I’m in a lot of pain and exercising is the last thing I want to do 🙈
When do you do your exercises? Xx

I try and walk every day and do a yoga class. I struggle to sit cross legged now. I’m also waiting to see a physio .
do you think heat or cold gives the best relief?

Could you do some gentle stretches before work?
Also look at your footwear. It can make a huge difference to joint pain further up.
Take care @Genesislove hopefully the injections will help you 'buy time' before surgery is essential.
There isnt really an age thing it's just the replacement joints only last so long and they'd really prefer to do the surgery only once.
Making sure you are healthy otherwise not smoking BMI ok etc will also stop them from delaying surgery.
Best of luck

I've always done my exercises first thing. I'm an early riser and, when in full time work, was up between 5.30 and 6.00, giving me time to do at least an hour before work. Now I'm retired I still get up at 6.00 and do an early morning dog walk and an hour of yoga before breakfast. I'm sure I would have had. difficulty getting into a regular routine of exercise after work, so this suits me.

Hi @Genesislove I'm in a similar situation. I'm 46 and need both knees replaced. As you were a keen runner previously, it might be a good idea to use a floatation device so you can run in the pool. I'm sure I saw Sonia O'Sullivan use this device as part of her training. Zero impact on the joints. Hope this is of some help
