Hi, l have recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees and am looking for a bit of advice. I like to keep as active as I can but am struggling at the moment. I try and play walking football twice a week but am finding it quite painful at times. Is it worth me buying a knee support/brace and if so what sort of thing should I be looking at?

Thanks,

Chris

Greetings, @Chodski . I see that you have osteoarthritis in your knees, a recent diagnosis. Here is a link to information on our website about the condition.

You try to keep active, but are finding the walking football you enjoy something of a challenge and ask for information on knee supports. Opinion across the forum varies, some swear by them, others swear at them.

I have found this link which has a section dealing with knee supports. I hope it helps.

Good luck, and please post again, if only to let us know the score!

This is a difficult question as exercise is not only good but essential. But it has to be the right kind. I can see that walking dootball might involve sudden turns and might last longer than you're comfortable with. Discomfort is fine but, if you are in pain for some time afterwards, maybe try different exercise.

You could always try supports, though. Don't wear them all the time as they encourage muscle weakness which makes our arthritis worse. II've always used the basic neoprene ones.

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    Thanks for the reply.

As well as the arthritis I have a neurological problem which causes me to have constant pain in my legs. I have tried different forms of exercise but have found the walking football is great as I can concentrate on the football and not on my legs. It’s also great for my mental health. Unfortunately, as the arthritis in my knees is getting worse I am struggling after. I will give supports a go as I’m reluctant to stop playing football.
