Osteoarthritis of Lumbar Spine

I am 58 and was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in January 2019 and have nerve impingement affecting my right leg. Originally the nerve pain was down the back of my leg but was improved by a steroid injection. I am now suffering with nerve pain to the front of my leg and it is far more painful. I had a steroid injection in August but unfortunately this only lasted about 6 weeks. I have a telephone appointment with my Neurosurgeon on Monday.

I do exercises most mornings that were given to me by an NHS Physio but these are mainly stretching and some core strengthening.

Has anyone else got experience of this and has anyone had surgery to relieve the pressure on their nerves?

    Hi @LesleyAW

Welcome to the online community, its great you have found us and want to chat

You say that you have had osteoarthritis and diagnosed in 2019 and Originally had nerve pain down the back of your leg but now it has transfered to the front of the leg, also a steroid injection was administered but still not pain free.

Its good you have a telephone appointment with the Nuerosurgeon on Monday as you will be able to chat to them, hopefully they will come up with and answer. You also ask if anyone else has experienced symptoms like yours and have they had surgery.

Hi @Chris_R Thanks for the information. A lot of the exercises are ones that were given to me by a Physio but I've added a couple of the others to my routine.

The Neurosurgeon wants me to have another MRI scan and then a face to face appointment with him to discuss what to do next.

    Hi,

I hope things aren't too bad for you at the moment. I have very similar problems to you. Degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, prolapsed discs, impingement of sciatic nerve, nerve damage and osteoarthritis of lower back and hips. I'm 57 and suddenly everything is getting worse! I had a spinal injection in August but unfortunately this didn't help.

Do you still manage with work and keeping active? Do you find it draining? I would love to follow how you get on as surgery has been mentioned to me.

Take care and good luck with everything.

    Lily

I hadn't realised how long it was since my original post! Hopefully I go in for surgery on Friday, it has been cancelled once. I am going in for an interlaminar decompression involving a laminectomy. I am hopeful that this will improve the situation.

I haven't worked for nearly 4 years as my job involved me sitting for long periods of time which I couldn't do. I've tried various ways to keep active but have often found things were made worse. I have recently started working with a physio who is also a personal trainer who has been helping me with exercises to get stronger before surgery and is going to help me with my rehab afterwards.

@Lilydog66 sorry I didn't reply to your comment. I had to give up work but still try to keep active. I am working with a physio who is also a PT and he is really helping build my strength. I have had surgery cancelled twice but hoping to get a new date in a couple of weeks. I am having a nerve decompression and really hoping that this helps.

How are you managing are you still working?

    Take care
