Hello

I found out last week that I have Ostioarthritis in my hip and pelvis (probably due to an old riding accident). I've been living with absolute pain in my hip since April this year, sometimes I can't even walk across a room because of the pain, which is a bit demoralising as i'm only 50! I was a runner but that's now a long distant dream as some days just walking is an issue!!

My Dr. perscribed Naproxen but that sets off my Temporal Lobe epilepsy, so thats out the window. She doesn't think I would be able to take any other anti-inflammatories as they'd probably have the same effect so I'm looking at holistic alternatives that I can use alongside perscribed painkillers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any suggestions?

Thanks in advance, Helen

Greetings and welcome to the forum, @Helen50 . I understand that you have recently been told that you have Osteoarthritis in the hip and pelvis, brought on you suspect by an old riding accident. You react badly to Naproxen and you GP suspects that this may also be the case for other inflammatory medicines.

You ask if there is any alternative treatments that might assist. This links to information on our website:

Here is information on the condition itself:

    Hi @Helen50

I am sorry to hear you are struggling like you are and can't take anti-inflammatories. Oddly enough quite a few on here can't for various reasons; gastric, breathing problems etc.

My own daughter can't and had to have hip surgery and a replacement shoulder at 18 and 19 with codeine to get her through. I hope your GP has given you some decent pain relief at least although I never underestimate the benefit of something as simple as paracetamol.

My daughter and I both swear by our warm wheatbags (the ones you microwave?) we have had as many as 7 between us. Not sure how they help but they really do. If you haven't got one it might be worth a try? I also have a tens machine (the 3rd I'v ever had and this one is new) which helps too.

Other than that I tend to try to eat healthily lots of fruits and veg and keep my weight down. I actually like turmeric tea, but doubt it does anything for me. Others here have mentioned capsaicin (sp) which is a prescription only ointment which is apparently fabulous.

Take care and keep posting. Chatting to others who understand can really help distract you from your own pain.
