Naproxen

Thank you for your kind responses to my inltial post.

My GP has decided to put me on Naproxen for a trial period. Up to now I have used Ibuprofen and achieved reasonable relief. Have any fellow arthritis sufferers been using Naproxen? I would be interested to hear if it has been more or less beneficial than Ibuprofen.

kind regards

    Hi

Yes, my Doctor prescribed me Naproxen when I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in my right knee about 15 months ago. I do find it helps relieve the aching and stiffness and enables me to do my physio exercises without too much discomfort. I only take them as and when needed and only for 2-3 days at a time, as they can make me a bit constipated. Otherwise, when there is less pain I make do with Paracetamol. I used to take Ibuprofen, but they were a smaller dosage, so instead of 2 x 200g Ibuprofen, I now take 1x 500g Paracetamol.

I hope this helps answer your question.

    Take care. 🙂

    Hi.

yes I am taking Naproxen currently. Although a reduced rate recently.

has your doctor prescribed Ameprezole as well to protect the stomach?

Hi, I was on Naproxen along with Cocodamol when my hip packed up. It's best to take the naproxen regularly to help keep the inflammation under control. It's not an "as and when" pain killer like paracetamol, it's there to stop the inflammation getting worse, rather than deal with daily flare ups. View it like a course of antibiotics - you need to take the course for it to work at its best. I took it twice a day in conjunction with Omeprazole to stop it affecting my stomach, which is equally important.

I found it was the cocodamol that gave me awful constipation (codeine is notorious for it), but I managed that with Movicol or Laxido to soften the stool and Senokot to get it moving. It can be a bit "trial and error" getting the balance right though! 😳

Hi Susquehanna, yes I was on Naproxen together with cocodamol 30/500 for about 10 years when ordinary paracetamol and ibuprofen were no longer effective for me.

It was definitely better than non prescription medication.

In fact I’m thinking of asking for Naproxen again to supplement my Tramadol.

I’m sure you’ll find it effective.

I was prescribed Naproxen for back problems (after a riding accident) and it worked well on a 'as and when needed' basis but when I tried it for the osteo-arthritis in my neck I found it wasn't as effective as Nurofen (ibuprofen) or Nurofen+ (ibuprofen and codeine) so I think it depends on the individual and the nature of the arthritis. I do take omeprazole to protect my stomach as well.

  • I was prescribed Naproxen (with omeprazole) I have taken some as and when needed but it hasn't help that much .

I have Naproxen - I think you need to take it regularly to build up in your system.

  • Thank you for your responses. Now on 3rd day of Naproxen with the addition of Omeprazole to protect stomach. So far so good, relief about the same as. Ibuprofen.

    regards
