Managing knee pain

Hi I have just recently been diagnosed with arthritis in my knees I don't know how to manage my pain and some days it's terrible. I have a physical job as a school cleaner and prior that a mobile area cleaning supervisor so quite active. I have been advised by the doctors to lose some weight and i am doing so as this will help but in the meantime iam taking painkillers and a cream to put on my knees daily. Can anybody advise if I am doing things correctly and if things will improve? I am 58 but feel 100 😔
