@Nurina that’s a good analogy, that’s what I’m doing if I’ve done too much one day, I try and rest the next, but I get so bored just sitting lol I didn’t realise until now that I’m always on the go doing something, on a positive note I can walk downstairs without a crutch but I still need one to go upstairs, so that’s something that I couldn’t do yesterday , little gains 😊

Going downstairs is easier than going upstairs due to the Newton laws (small boy having his gcse of physics tomorrow😂)

    @Nurina I’ll have to remember that 😂

May 30th it’s been 5 weeks and one day since my op, still having broken sleep, I’m walking in the house without any aids, but still a bit wary about walking unaided outside, so I’m using a stick. I still have a slight pain in my groin when I get up after a night laying down but I think it’s muscular, and I found it was worse after laying on my side, so it’s back to laying on my back, nothing much to report, everything seems to have slowed down at the moment, seeing the consultant and physio next Thursday, have a great day everyone Bev x

@Bevdav123 nearly 6 weeks since your hip op, time seems to be going quickly. Sounds like you are progressing very well and I hope all goes well for you next Thursday. Take care.

Day 38 Feeling a bit fed up at the moment, I’ve started having pain in my groin, it’s not constant, i can walk but after a while it starts to ache, and it hurts when I’m laying down and stretching my leg out straight, I’m panicking it’s going to be like before the op, I’m hoping it’s muscular, I’m seeing the consultant Thursday so I’ll ask then.

Hey, @Bevdav123 we understand that recovery can come with the good and bad days. Please remember that Versus Arthritis is always here to help, especially while you're waiting to see your consultant.

@Bevdav123 it sounds like you're doing really well, @Nurina is spot on with the moon analogy. It's hard to see the progress when you're in it all the time.

I'm at just under 5.5 months now and bar the odd twinges when I push too much am pretty much fully recovered. I'm still doing physio exercises but that's it really.

Reading your diary does bring back all those things from the first couple of months - trying to sleep on my back, very gradually building up walking, coming off the meds and trying to decide on one or two crutches when going out! We're all different but your journey seems like most of us experience.

Hope it continues well. Take care

Day 39 The pain in my groin has disappeared! I’m so happy, I honestly thought I was having the same pain that I had before the op, and I’ve gone longer in between taking my painkillers today too, let’s hope I’m turning a corner, hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday, the sun is shining here 😎 and I’m having an afternoon spent in the garden.

@Bevdav123 that is good news. Groin pain is really uncomfortable and when it happens I just have to rest and pace myself. Weather here has been sunny and warm as well. Still trying to do a little bit in my garden ( at the moment pre-op can only manage about 15 minutes ) but am looking forward to getting back out there after my hip op. Take care.🙂

@Bevdav123 I was just about to say I hoped your groin pain would disappear soon and it has done, so that's great. I remember I got it by overdoing my walking or jobs about the house of garden, but less and less now at almost six months. As @Fran54 says rest and pace when it happens. My physio told me pace, patience and paracetamol were the way to go!

Good luck with your consultant tomorrow.

Day 43 Had a physio appointment this morning, she’s very pleased with my progress, was given a resistant band to make some of the exercises harder, but she doesn’t want to see me again, she’s given me an open 3 month appointment just incase I need to see her, but she reckons I’ll be ok, and this afternoon had an appointment with the consultant, he said my scar was fine, there’s a tiny little bit of a stitch that hasn’t dissolved but he says it will disappear eventually, he was pleased with how I’m progressing, so now I’m officially on the waiting list for my right hip, he showed me my x ray and saw my new shiny hip, and my other poor hip looking a mess, he has given me the ok for my holiday to Majorca, as long as I take aspirin 75mg 2 weeks before and whilst I’m there to avoid blood clots.Oh and I did a 2 mile walk today too! I think I’m starting to turn a corner and I’m on the mend 🤞

@Bevdav123 That is such good news for you today. Hope it won't be too long before your other hip is done. Have a lovely holiday🌞

@Bevdav123 What a wonderful read. So happy to read you can go to Majorca and the aspirin is sensible. At your stage I still had a little bit of a stitch resisting dissolving but it wasn't long after before it did and then all well. At almost six months now I realise I have really improved over the last month although I thought I was almost there at your stage. Keep on with your exercises and you'll be amazed at your progress - although two miles today is amazing.

Hope you're not waiting too long for your other hip 🤞

7 Weeks post op and I’m doing really well, I can now climb the stairs without any aids, I’m not exactly quick and my arms help by pulling me up on the bannister, but saying that, that’s how I was doing it before the op, still have a slight groin pain when I’ve overdone things, but on the whole I’m actually forgetting about my new hip, I’m still using a stick while out walking, I did walk with out it for about half a mile but then got tired and needed it again, but I’m sure my fitness will improve soon and hopefully I’ll be able to go further without it. I’m counting down the days till we go on holiday, because the weather here is really chilly at the moment, can’t wait to feel the sun, saying that I saw that Palma airport was flooded yesterday! Fingers crossed it will be fine when we get there. Hope all my fellow hippies are doing ok, this really is a life changing op, the pain has disappeared ( except for the other hip) and I’m feeling more positive, can’t wait to get the other one done , but here in Wales our waiting lists are long, but I’m so happy I’ve had the one done 😊 off do to my exercises now, take care all Bev x

@Bevdav123 Hi. I'm from South Wales and I'm waiting for the second hip replacement (it's bothering me a lot btw). They told me that "it's not happening this year". I'm.glad you feel so positive and you are getting ready for your holidays. X

@Nurina my consultant told me 7 year wait! But saying that when I saw him in December he told me 2 year wait and then I was called in for the op in April, it’s just soul destroying when you get told that.

@Bevdav123 - you are doing well, your post reminds me of how I was - pulling myself up the stairs. The good news is that now I am walking up and down better than I have in years - I have a definite strength now that has appeared over the last three or four weeks. I did find my progress slowed down after the first few weeks so please don't get fed up if your progress slows down for a while,

I really hope you don't have too long to wait for your second hip but it's so good to know you will be off to the warmth in a few days - you deserve it 😊

@Janlyn thankyou, progress seems to have slowed down, went to a retail park on Saturday and walked up two flights of stairs ( in different stores) and boy was I aching yesterday, shoulders arms neck, I didn’t realise how much I was pulling myself up with my arms, my husband did suggest the lift, but I was being stubborn lol I can do it I said , perhaps next time I’ll listen to him, our holiday is end of June and I can’t wait, but I’m going to pace myself, and just take things easy and not go climbing lots of stairs!

@Bevdav123 I know it's frustrating and seems to be never-ending but I'm sure you'll 'get there'. It really is only patience and perseverance, and maybe paracetamol, that works. You don't know whether you can until you try - but usually I found after a couple of days if I'd overdone it - hoping by tomorrow you're back on track, and probably just a little bit further forward. Not long until your holiday now and maybe you'll find it easier to relax then?

Back home after a lovely 10 days in Majorca, progressed loads since being out there, took my stick but the only place I used it was at the airport on the way over, our hotel was a little way out of the main strip of bars and restaurants, so we walked there and back most days, I was averaging 12000 steps a day, I’m sure the heat helps with recovery. I feel like I’m back to normal now, my other hip is still giving me pain so I’m still taking painkillers, I start back to work on Monday ( I work 3 days ) be great to get back to some type of normal. I hope I don’t have to wait as long for the op on the other hip, so fingers crossed I’ll hear something sooner rather than later.
