Is this deferred pain?

Ive just been told I have early hip degeneration but the pain at the front of my thigh and shin is unbearable at time. I can only stand for around 2 mins before I have to sit down with the heat pad. Is this normal?

Hi @NannyTaft I agree to contact your doctor or consultant about your pain. I have recently had my hip replaced but your pain sounds similar to mine pre-surgery. I believe mine was mainly linked to muscles either not being used or not being used correctly. I'm now well on the way to getting the muscles sorted with the help of physio and a chiropractor. It may be you could be referred to a physio or msk clinic for help with managing the cause of the pain - it's amazing how helpful exercise can be and knowing when to move and when to rest. Take care.

@NannyTaft I was first diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in my right knee back in 2020. Over the last year I found the pain was radiating down the right outside part of my knee and down my shins also at the front and inside of right thigh. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I had a referral to see a Consultant he said straight away that it was my hip not my knee which needed replacing ( I had had a pelvic x-ray done last March as well as knee x-ray ). I told him about the worsening pain in my knee/shin and said it was deferred pain from my hip. I also agree that it would be better for you to consult your GP as mentioned by @Janlyn and @Naomi33. Hope that you can get some relief soon as this can be so debilitating. Please keep us updated. Take care.🙂

  • Hi @NannyTaft, really sorry to hear that the pain is so unbearable. As @Fran54 experienced it’s quite common that nerve pain or deferred pain can affect a wider area than just the arthritic joint. The pain can radiate up or down. As @Fran54, @Janlyn and @Naomi33 suggested, please speak to your GP or consultant to explain the worsening symptoms and to discuss treatment options to manage the pain. Treatment options you may want to discuss with your healthcare team, and other things that may help are included on the links. Hope they help. Please call us on the helpline if you would like to discuss. Thanks, Natalie, Helpline Advisor.
