Newly diagnosed with osteoarthritis
Hi I am newly diagnosed with osteoarthritis But I feel like I’ve just been left to get on with it without any info about it at all. I saw the consultant and he just told me that I’ve got widespread osteoarthritis and suggested going on amitryptaline which i dont want to take so early on in my diagnosis. I’m reading up as much as I can, but feel that I definitely do have flareups with this and obviously it really is affecting my life. I’m just after finding out any information about flareups with osteoarthritis and how it affects us and how to keep active when you’re in such pain. Thank you in advance.

I know I bang on about this, but do research foods that are inflammatory. There are 5 which I’ve cut out of my diet. When I cheat & eat too much of any of them, I get a flare up which can last up to 6 weeks.
There are also foods which help, such as berries. All this info is available on line.
i also take supplements which contain turmeric among other natural ingredients. (Activ8 which is very expensive, but does seem to help with the pain)
like you, I’m loathe to take strong painkillers. I try to manage without, but take ibuprofen & paracetamol when it gets too bad.
I also do excercises. Again, lots of advice on line, & walk as much as possible.
I hope this helps. It’s hard work, but worth it to me as I don’t want to be popping pills until I have no other choice.1 -

@Deezy as you notice there are multiple symptoms, so it may be sensible to suggest there is no one best line of treatment, other than the one that will help the most with what you want to do. There might not be time for any of the other lines of treatment anyway, but at least they will be in with a better chance of happening.
I find my flare ups are worse if I overdo any joint activity, but there are so many joints to chose from. I found it was important to be able to nurse each joint individually according to how fragile they are.
