Working with osteoarthritis in hands

Hello!! I'm new to this but glad to have found this community as I don't really know what to do. I have a desk job in the NHS and can end up spending a whole day typing so bought some compression gloves, but I don't know if they make things works or better. I've attached a photo of the gloves .. any advice? Thanks.

Hello! I'm new on here and just browsing and saw your post about the gloves. I have arthritis in my right hand and I use these though mainly in the winter, when my pain seems to get worse in the cold.

I work on a laptop most of the day and forr me, they do provide some support and I find doing something proactively - in this case, wearing the gloves does make me feel like I am helping myself.

    Hi both

Is your arthritis specific to any part of your hand, ie thumb or the hand generally?

Hello @GraceandGlory and @AnnaS and welcome to the Community. We are a friendly and supportive group and I hope that will be your experience as well.

I have used compression gloves for some years now and find them to be really useful helping with the pain. I hope that you will find the same benefits. We sell them in the Versus Arthritis shop as well which means any profits go to support the work that we do in helping people with arthritis.

Where does arthritis affect your hands? You might find that splints are also beneficial, though of course they do limit movement.

Please keep posting and let us know how you get on and if you need any more information.

    Best wishes

    Peter

I'd ask for an appointment at your local hand clinic from your GP. Hands are complex. I've had to give up playing the guitar/uke and piano and can no longer do my goldwork and silk shading embroidery. I'm waiting for ops on both hands (Here in Wales I'll be 100 I think before they get round to it!!!) and have signed the papers for the op to go ahead - last March, so still waiting. I was told by the specialist's secretary that it will be at least another year!

But I did see a wonderful Occupational Therapist at the hospital though and I have Spica supports for thumb/wrist. I also have exercises to do which help, And have my ortho-putty. It's a bit like plasticene and you can work it while watching telly. Brilliant. It really helps to use the correct exercises and the correct splits. You will need advice from someone who knows about hands and OTs/Physios are great.

I think you need to take medical advice first, as it could be a number of problems with your hands.

    Good luck.
