Waiting list.

I have just seen my Consultant who is putting me on his NHS list for a total hip replacement.

Just wondering what waiting lists have been for others in my situation? He mentioned up to 18months☹️ but hopefully sooner. I’m in Derbyshire.

Hi there. I live in Notts. I first approached my GP in January of this year for an x-ray as I was having a lot of trouble with my left hip. The x-ray showed pretty bad osteoarthritis with no cartilage left and bone spurs. I tried physio but it just made things worse. I could not walk without a stick and had been limping for the last two years. I asked to be referred to a senior physio and he referred me on to the waiting list for a hip replacement. That was in early May. I had my operation last weekend at a private hospital but funded by the NHS. They had prioritised me because my hip was in such a bad state. I could hardly walk by this time. So it does depend how bad your condition is I believe. In Notts. it's about nine months to a year on average. I was very fortunate not to have to wait that long. Hope all goes well for you.

it’s a bit of a postcode lottery. My trust (East Herts) wait is about 2 years for hip and knee replacement, but sometimes you can be moved up the list due to different circumstances. My brother is a self employed builder who told the consultant he wants to carry on working and doesn’t want to go on disability benefits. The pain was affecting his work, obviously. His had his hip replacement within a few months! Those consultants can tweak those lists!

It's a postcode lottery indeed. If you live in England, you can get the surgery in a private hospital, funded by NHS. Depends on where you are based, it could be 6 months or two years. If you live in Wales, NIreland or Scotland, two, three, four or even six years. I don't think consultants can't tweak the lists. It'd be illegal, but they can evaluate the quality of life of a patient and and put them up in a more urgent list.

Im in Nottingham. First diagnosed 14 year ago but got in touch with my GP in Feb to ask for referral for THR. Because I'm 53 and my osteo arthritis is bone on bone in both hips now, as a professional gardener I've had to take a hiatus off work. I had my first call on Friday, I've been put with a surgeon who specialises in younger patients, my prosthetic will be slightly different (bigger head) so I will have no restrictions when I recover, which was honestly music to my ears but means I've had to wait a bit longer. My surgeon has said I'll have my operation in October because I have other things at home to organise so all told I'll have waited 8 months.

I hope it's not too long for you, good luck.
