Hip pain

Good evening

Can anyone tell me why after having a physio assessment which confirmed I needed a referral for a hip replacement, I get a letter referring me to a community physiotherapist. After 30 minutes of being subjected to excruciating pain I have been referred for an MRI as apparently with mild osteoarthritis of the hip I shouldn't be experiencing the amount of pain that I am. The only advise I was given was to get a rollater walker to support me walking around.

My mobility has been severely affected and I have had to retire from my much loved job as a care manager of a dementia home. My 70 year old husband is having to look after me.

I do know it is a long wait for a hip replacement but feel that no one actually believes me with regard to the pain I am in.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for the MRI. By referring you for an MRI scan they are taking your pain seriously by trying to find the cause of it.

The MRI scan shows more than just the bones, so should help determine if your pain is from something other than osteoarthritis.

MRI of the hip provides detailed images of structures within the hip joint, including bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and blood vessels, from all angles, and can also provide details of structures near the hip, such as the sacroiliac joints or lower lumber spine.

If they can determine what is causing the pain then they can give the right treatment, and it may be that hip replacement, is not the right treatment for you, and wouldn't ease your pain.

Hello @Suziqu and welcome to the online community.

I think it would be worth phoning your GP to review your treatment plan, and push for a referral to a orthopaedic surgeon.

Here is some info on hip replacement surgery for you.
