Income protection

I recently worked with an Independent Financial Advisor to seek Income Protection - I'm a full-time working solo parent, and happen to have Ankylosing Spondylitis.

An initial application with Lloyds was rejected and when the IFA went to their panel of underwriters, they all refused to provide income protection due to my "on-going health condition". How can this be possible, that I'm unable to provide protection for my daughter and I in the event of illness - which may have nothing to do with my AS. I have never had a day off sick due to the AS, I have worked full-time for nearly 30 years, I walk 6km a day, I have never been hospitalised or required any medial intervention, other than I am on weekly Benepali Etanercept injections.

Is everyone living with arthritis refused this insurance? Are there any providers anyone is aware of that do?

Hi @tamaz - welcome to our online community. I hope we can help you to find the answers you are looking for :)

Have you checked with other insurance companies or just this one? Maybe if you were to try some different ones you would find one that would cover you. Perhaps someone else can answer who has been in a similar situation and give you better advice on this.

    Best of luck! Claudia x

    Hi @tamaz,

I used a broker to find my various insurance policies, for life and income protection I ended up with LV, it was an arduous process involving a thorough examination by my GP but I did get it in the end, albeit with sky-high premiums.

    Hope that helps,

Thanks so much Jon and Claudia - I'll keep going, try LV and other providers. Appreciate the support.

@jonr - went through a different broker, and same, LV are the only ones to provide Income Protection for arthritic conditions, with of course:

"We will not pay a claim if it is due to, or arises from ankylosing spondylitis or its complications, or any disease or disorder of the back, neck or spine including the supporting muscles, ligaments, joints or discs of the spinal column or related nerves including sciatica"

Never thought I'd have to hope for cancer or a car crash….
