Amitriptyline

My Dad is 79 and in constant pain with arthritis in his hands and is awake a lot of the night. I read on Versus Arthritis that Amitriptyline can help but his doctor refuses to give it to him as he says it can cause long term damage and can only suggest paracetamol, which is not helping at all! Any views on Amitriptyline? Thank you

Afternoon @Steph123 and welcome to the online community.

I have no personal knowledge of Amitriptyline but the following link maybe of interest.

    https://www.versusarthritis.org/about-arthritis/treatments/drugs/amitriptyline/

I would however contact doctor /consultant and ask for more help with your fathers pain.

I am sure others will post with their comments and views shortly.

    Best wishes @Naomi33

I use amtriptlyn however I now have it to prevent migraines I have been on it before to stop nerve pain, however it no longer works for this. I have siatica, osteoarthritis in lower spine and rhretrothlisis. As I’ve said I take it now to prevent migraines it does help with sleep, as with my back conditions I struggle to sleep. I’d get a second opinion from another doctor.

That's most unhelpful isn't it when your poor Dad is 79 and suffering😒. Maybe you should ask for a referral to a pain clinic they may well prescribe it, or something else which could help. Once they've done that the GPs have to go along with it.

I had amitriptyline for a good while 25's at night they were and they were really helpful. I stopped them myself once I'd more or less got things under control with my pain. It didn't knock me out on the spot I used to take it at 7pm to get of 'normally' at 10ish.

    Best of luck @Steph123

  • Hi Steph - Sorry to hear about your Dad - I hope this link will post - and be helpful - I would just say that you need to make sure that your Dad only gets the low dose. This is because I have been on it at higher doses (I suffer from quite severe depression - as well as bad Osteoarthritis!) and higher doses of it can cause some horrible side effects!

Anyway good luck with your Dad and I hope that it helps!
