New Metoject pen

Hi. I’ve been taking methotrexate since November 2020 when I was diagnosed with RA. I swapped to metoject nearly 2 years ago as the tablets were making me feel sick. I’ve always had a needle phobia so not a decision I took lightly. They’ve recently changed the style of pen to a button free pen but I can’t bring myself to push the needle into my tummy. Just spent over an hour trying to do it after applying 2 lots of numbing cream but now sat here in tears having not managed to do the injection yet again. I have missed quite a few weeks medication due to this and have been having flares ups as a result. Any suggestion how to make this easier? Does anyone know if the button style pens are still available? Tempted to go back to tablets but really don’t want to feel sick every day.

    Hi @Naomi84

I don't have to take methotrexate but have had many issues with pills and potions over the last 68 years. My advice would be rather than be unable to use the pen and suffer flare ups, speak with your rheumatology team or your pharmacist for help.

Pharmaceutical companies often change things which make life difficult for end users without realising. Your pharmacist may be able to find the same thing by a different brand to help you.

Whatever you do, speak to sonei e and get help now. Not taking your meds will make you ill as you have found.

Hello @Naomi84, welcome to the forum and thanks for your post.

I think you need to get some help from your care team with this. Contact your rheumy nurse/dept or GP so that you can get back on track with your treatment. It may be possible that your GP practice nurse could do the jab for you ? Do you have someone that you would feel comfortable to do the injection for you, say a neighbour/friend/family member (people love to help!).

Can you ask about other treatment options apart from methotrexate?

I agree with @Trish9556 , it is definitely worth talking to the pharmacist at your local pharmacy about this, and worth 'shopping around' local chemists until you find a friendly helpful one to see what else is available.

@Trish9556 @PJoanne thank you for your replies. Sorry, was the middle of the night, was tired and emotional and feeling sorry for myself. I managed to speak to my Rheumatology nurse today who will be arranging an appointment with my consultant to discuss changing to a different medication. Hopefully we can find something which works without the stress of doing that jab.
    Thank you again.
