Hi all,

just wondering if anyone is taking the above supplement alongside MTX. I am currently on MTX 20mg, Celecoxib (not working) and I wanted to try the supplement to see if I could lower my meds and just be on the supplement with MTX. I have asked my rheumatologist but not heard anything yet. Be good to hear if anyone is taking it and if it’s made a difference. Thanks

    Hi @Gadgetgirl,

It depends what you're expecting really in terms of results. Clucosamine and Choindratin are mainly aimed at cartilage protection and cushioning so not for pain management as such. I'm bone-on-bone in both my knees and when I tried these as a supplement I found it made my symptoms worse, possibly because I've no cartilage left or perhaps had a reaction to the Glucosamine which I believe to be derived from Shellfish. They say to give supplements 4-6 weeks to kick in so perhaps give them a go and see how you get on but if you've not much cartilage left then I doubt whether they'll help.

@jonr Thank you. I still have cartilage but my knee space is narrowing so I was hoping they might help with that. Did you take them alongside MTX as they is my main concern that they may interact with it.Thanks

  • Hi Gadget - As far as I know the Glucosamine /CHONDROITIN combo doesn't look like it has any real scientific backing for it's benefits. - If you don't already know that?

I have also taken it for months and no improvement - but obviously everyone is different. Sorry no experience of MTX, so can't be much help with that.

    Good luck with your research!

I think that all glucosamine chondroitin and celecoxib may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, so their combo may cause more side effects. I took protonix while taking [link removed] because these supplements really helped me with pain relief and I didn't want to quit it. Maybe your doctor will tell you so. You should monitor these symptoms, and the best decision is to wait for your doctors answer.

Apologies @Amelia234 your reply is so helpful but unfortunately it's against our rules to post a direct link "Direct links to purchase products (e.g. Amazon links) are not allowed…"

  • Hi Gadgetgirl,

I'm on 25mg injection MTX for over a year and have been taking glucosamine all the time. Tbh I didn't think of any interactions with them and can't say I've noticed any. Before MTX, if I stopped taking glucosamine I did notice increased pain in my knees. I'm guessing it's a case of suck it and see really.
