Bone on bone exercise

Hi, new here.

Diagnosed with arthritic knees in 2018, bone on bone, so surgery recommended - which I really do not want. I had physical therapy and joined gym silver sneakers classes as well as water walking. I can go weeks and feel really good, then one wrong stretch or balance exercise sets me back to the very beginning of my knee journey.

I have been told I am very 'tight', inflexible. Any suggestions about classes that might help…considering that getting up and down to the floor is an absolute no.

Thanks

Good afternoon @oldminermom and welcome to the online community.

Sorry to hear your concerns about exercising with bone on bone arthritic knees.

I tried the following pain management courses which introduce you to all exercises and then you decide what is best for you, if any ??

Personally I find walking best as natural and with a group good for your mental health to. Also hydro pool good just hassle of getting dressed and undressed 🤷‍♂️😂

    Hi there

Have you ever considered taking a joint supplement. I have been recommended vitabright glucosamine chondroitin msm by a friend who is worse than me and they say they are really helping.

  • Years ago my husband took it…at the time he seemed to do better. I had forgotten all about it. Another lady at the gym said her doctor recommended osteo bi-flex…I havent seen her lately, so I dont know if it's helped.

    Hi @oldminermom,

I've 2 bone-on-bone knees and was put forward for double total knee replacements earlier this year which (thankfully), I felt able to cancel as I'm seemingly coping pretty well. I've found an plain old exercise bike to be very helpful in strengthening my calves, quads and glutes to support my knees, good cardio too. If you have a dabble, it's important to get the saddle to a height where it's comfortable to turn the pedals then it's just a case of varying speed and resistance. I find doing this in time to music help with varying it and relieving the boredom!

Many Sport Centres have specialist staff who help people get into fitness following illness, or to lose weight safely or just cope with a debilitating condition like Arthritis. I got a 1:1 with one at my local sports centre, she put together a programme using weights, gym equipment like the treadmill, stairs machine and physio to help strengthen my legs and get some cardio going to keep me fit. I've been at it a year and it's been brilliant, took decent pain management though.

  • OK, I just cant seem to find the place to respond to a post when there are two in a row 🙄

to jonr: Yes, I dug out my old PT exercises and my portable bike and am going to start from the beginning. Every time I really seem to get things under control, I do too much and end up back at square one. When you look up 'clumsy' in the dictionary, my picture is posted there. I cannot do the 'balance' exercises since they cause the most problems. gotta be more careful.

to susy123: I have taken tramadol in the past…not with tylenol though. It did give me some temporary relief, but it seemed that it stopped working after a while, so dont take i anymore. Now when I do have pain, I stop overdoing, elevate and ice leg, take Advil - which really works great on me but is a nono for long term.
