Knee advice for a new member

Hello all, 4 years ago l was tiling a small room in the house and the up and down movements created pain in my left fibula and my knee swelled up then eventually it went down and with the help of a knee sleeve things got better.

l decided to go private for an XRAY and was told "advanced osteoarthritis in knee" so because of covid etc l decided to manage it and up to now has been successful but recently l have struggled to get up from the chair as the pain has returned in the fibula where it joins to the side of the knee so much so l have resorted to ibuprofen to go about my day although stairs are still a challenge.

Strangely enough l can sleep without pain but struggle first thing in the morning to stand as it seems that going from 90 degrees to full length is the worst pain, my right knee is telling me it's not happy now so l must be careful although l do take my dog for a mile walk in the morning still.

Does anyone relate to this and are there any excercises better than others for this, new knee is not an option as l have no funds……………….l'm an active 77 year old…very best wishes all.

Hello @Volvoman and welcome to the online community,

There have been several threads from members about their experiences of living with knee arthritis - here’s a recent one below:

Have you discussed with your GP or consultant about knee replacement surgery with the NHS? Depending on the area you live in, the waiting list may not be as long as you imagine. In any event, a discussion about pain management might be worth while.

You are right that exercise can help build up the muscles and help with the pain. Here’s a link to some exercises recommended by Versus Arthritis that you might find helpful - I hope so:

  • Thank you so much for your message and for the exercises from Versus Arthritis—I really appreciate it! I’ll definitely give them a try to see if they help manage the pain.

I have discussed knee replacement surgery with my GP, and we’re exploring all options at the moment. Thankfully, the waiting list in my area doesn't seem too long, but we're also focusing on pain management in the meantime.

Your advice is really helpful, and I’m hopeful that a combination of these exercises and continued discussions with my doctor will help improve things while I wait for further steps.

    Thanks again!
