hi new to the site. Been living with RA and OA for 15+ years. I’m 57 and been on methotrexate for most of that time. I have 3 monthly blood tests of which all have been well. My last one however has come back with my liver enzymes high. I now have a viral infection which has floored me, my enzymes are still high and my doctor is not sure if it’s the infection or a reaction to the methotrexate. I feel so low today, my joints are painful n muscles ache. Even with doses of prescribed co codamel. My partner is good and work have been understanding but I’m worried. Just needed to vent

Hello @Aliene and welcome to the Community. We are a friendly and supportive group and I hope that will be your experience as well. I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling down. I also have RA and I know that sometimes you have weird reactions and it does get you down. I am due a blood test tomorrow so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I don't know enough about it to know whether the infection could have affected your liver results but presumably your Rheumy nurses is looking at all possibilities?

We have a lot of members in our community that have RA so there will probably already be some threads discussing your issues. Use the search facility (the magnifying glass at top right of screen) to search Liver and you will see a list of discussions that have taken place in the community.

Our website is a mine of information so do look at it. You might be particularly interested in:

Please keep posting now you are here and let us know how you are getting on.

    Best wishes

  • Hi @Aliene, I had abnormal liver function last year. I am also taking MTX with biologics. I had an Ultrasound which showed fatty liver.

My rheumatologist referred me for a liver fibroscan (like a very detailed ultrasound) which showed normal liver but I was advised that if I continue on MTX I should have a liver fibroscan every 2 yearly. The cause for abnormal liver function was due to some antibiotics I had taken at that time.

I don’t think GPs can refer for a liver fibroscan but you can at least request them to refer you for an ultrasound.

Hopefully if normal that will give some reassurance.
