Hi not been on here for a while but I would like to know how much wear you need on your hip before replacement.

Thank you Liza

  • Hi @Liza

Thanks for your post to the Helpline. I'm not sure what type of arthritis you may be affected by, whether it's Osteoarthritis or another type. You can look up our information including the joints affected in our Conditions search. But as you've mentioned wear I'll attach a link to Osteoarthritis of the hip.

Often with the hip if you are getting disturbed sleep with the pain, it would be worth discussing with the GP. As things go on, you'd expect to be referred to physiotherapy. But if you are following the self-management advice - doing your exercises regularly and doing your best to eat healthily to keep weight down and if the pain at night becomes more troublesome, that might be the time to discuss: either with the MSK health team or the GP, getting referred to an Orthopaedic specialist.

The final decision on when to have surgery is a very individual one, but worsening pain or more problems when you are walking, are the kinds of things which you might want to discuss with the health care professionals.

I hope that's helpful and do feel free to give us a call if you'd like a chat about your situation.

    all the best

I think it depends on the case but, in my opinion, you might need a hip replacement when you start not doing what you usually do because of the pain or the stiffness. Maybe you will not be able to walk the distances you used to walk, or feel uncomfortable sleeping and sitting. Maybe you could start limping or having pain in the back or knees.
