Hello everyone, I just got my blood test results as I've been diagnosed with Ankylosing arthritis a year ago and noticed a sharp increase in the level of ALT which is related to the liver

74 iu/L Range:0 - 33 iu/L

I checked the website to understand what's going on. Could it be the sulfazalasine tablets causing this increase? I'm taking 2 tablets/day together with 22.5mg Methotrexate/week and Biological treatment injection, Secukinumab/month. I do have a very dry mouth. I wonder if something is going wrong in my liver. Any advice, please? With thanks.

    Hi @pianoforte

You might be better speaking to your GP or Rheumatologist about this, unfortunately I can't give out medical advice. Hope everything is okay and hopefully nothing too serious.

I had a spike in my ALT in my routine methotrexate bloods. Having spoken with a rheumatology nurse, at my hospital we can message them via MyChart, she got me to do repeat bloods 2 weeks later at which point it was still high but had dropped. Since then it has gone back down to a about 10 higher than when I started methotrexate and well in the normal range.

I would contact your rheumatology department or your GP and hopefully it is just an odd blimp like mine was.

Afternoon @pianoforte sorry to hear your concerns.

I to am having blood result issues and trying to sort out how and why at the moment.

I was on MTX taken off straight away and awaiting new alternative.

I was also advised to discuss with my GP by my RA consultant which I did and had more tests again waiting for them to contact with me to discuss🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Hope this helps you and to let you know you are not alone ❤

    Best wishes @Naomi33

So many thanks for your valuable support! I've managed to get in touch with the rheumathology nurse who told me to go off the MTX and redo a blood test in 2 weeks. I've had the COVID vaccine and a bad cold so hopefully it's the cause of the high level of ALT. I'll try not to worry and be patient!

    Thx again! ❤️

    hi @pianoforte

I am also on Sulphasalasine & Methotrexate my ALP (not ALT) spiked at 178 back in Feb and has dropped but remains high. After initial concerns by GP and suggestion might need to look at stopping Sulphasalazine had further tests that revealed nothing and it’s now at 158 (still 30 above range) but flagged as satisfactory. Very confused as to whether it matters!
